Daily game drives

You will explore the natural splendor of Kwandwe in the early morning and late afternoon / evening with game drives in an open 4x4 safari vehicle. An armed ranger and tracker team will share their extensive knowledge of the bush with you as you track the Big Five, as well as a variety of other wildlife.

Morning drives will begin as dawn breaks over the Great Fish River, and you will have the opportunity to see the predators winding up their nocturnal hunts and settling in for the day. Many animals take advantage of the cool morning hours to graze before the heat of the day. In the late afternoon, wildlife can often be spotted coming down to the river to drink. Night drives will produce some unusual sightings, including aardvark, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, and porcupine.

Interpretive bush walks

In between game drives, you will take a closer look at the subtle, unseen wonders of the bush on a leisurely walk within easy reach of your lodge. Dense euphorbia thickets are best explored on foot, revealing a secret world of lichen, mosses, and ferns. You will also encounter various birds of prey and other species nest in the taller trees or in the spiny canopy. An armed ranger will guide you through up close and personal sightings of occasional buffalo herds, various antelope species, giraffe, warthog, bushbuck, or bush pig.

Big game walking safari

You will experience the thrill of tracking big games, such as white rhino, black rhino, elephant, and buffalo on foot in the wilderness, accompanied by an armed specialist ranger and tracker team. The walk will last 3 to 4 hours and end with a picnic lunch on the banks of the Great Fish River or at a scenic spot in the bush.

This safari will take place at Great River Fish Lodge. The lodge is located is in Grahamstown, Africa. It is situated high up on a steep bank with expansive viewing decks over the Great Fish River. Grahamstown, South Africa is nestled in the heart of South Africa’s unspoiled Eastern Cape province. "We had the best time here. We loved the service and care offered by all the staff. The game spotters and rangers are so persistent in their search for game and explain the tracks and sounds that they hear which indicate there may be game to see. There is such a rich of animal and plant life diversity here. We loved the bush breakfast and barbeque. It was great fun in the truck on the early and late drives. The food was delicious and the room so comfortable. It was a great finale to our time in South Africa."

"There is no better place to stay and experience wildlife in South Africa than Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. The staff are so nice and attentive. They made you feel right at home and took care of everything. Our guides were amazing. They were so much fun to be around and extremely informative. We felt so lucky to be in such a wonderful place and sample a small part of life in the game reserve. The animals were awesome to behold, with rhino, lions, cheetah, antelope of every sort, hippos, giraffes, and elephants just to name a few. We could not have been happier. Thank you to all of the staff for making us feel so welcome!"

"It is an experience to be believed, sighting as we have never seen before. We went on a gentle walk in the bush where watching a couple of termites brought so much pleasure. Excellent, delicious gourmet food with fresh veggies were served. All presented by staff who could not have done more for you all with the biggest smiles. It is truly a memorable experience. It could not have been better."
