Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka blends the adventure of a Sri Lankan safari with exceptionally comfortable accommodation, while minimizing ecological footprint, to offer you the definitive wildlife experience. Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka operates across the island several campsites that are non-permanent, yet they strive to offer the most comfortable accommodation with touches of luxury for the comfort of their guests.
During the safari, you will stay in a campsite. Since the campsite is located on the quieter Katagamuwa (western) entrance, Kulu Safari Sri Lanka can operate throughout the year and all the safaris are done in the less crowded blocks (blocks 3, 4, and 5) .
The spirit of Kulu is to tread lightly, leaving a minimal footprint on the natural ecology of the wilds. Across the island, Kulu operates several campsites that are non-permanent, yet they strive to offer the most comfortable accommodation with touches of luxury for the comfort of their guests. The campsites are handpicked for their remoteness - most often their guests are the only dinner party for miles!
All tents have been custom-made in South Africa by one of the world’s leading safari outfitters. The base camp in Yala offers large tents (each tent is over 200 sq. ft.) that are secured on raised wooden platforms. Each tent includes a small deck (or "veranda") for some private space to sip an evening drink, or to relax with a good book.
The tents have en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold showers. The fly screens support excellent ventilation while keeping out pesky critters.
The safari starts on the booked day at 12.00 noon, Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka team will pick you from the meeting point close to the campsite. You are then taken to camp for a late lunch. Once you arrive at camp, one of the guides will give you a quick briefing that covers safety, nuances of camp and inquire about any special requests that you may have.
You will leave camp at approximately 3 p.m. for the afternoon safari. The safaris take place at Yala National Park. Yala is renowned for being home to the world’s densest leopard population. However, it won’t be only leopards that you will see as there are elephants, buffalo, deer and a vast variety of birdlife to be viewed as well. For the safaris, Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka uses land cruisers which are very quiet in the park and are modified to optimize both wildlife viewing and photography.
Since Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka campsite is located on the quieter Katagamuwa (western) entrance, they can operate throughout the year and all the safaris are done in the less crowded Blocks that is blocks 3, 4 and 5. Most of the safaris are done in Yala Block 5 as it’s only a 30-minute drive from the campsite. Block 5 is a very scenic park and guests have experienced some amazing wildlife viewing too.
The game drive starts at the crack of dawn so you will see the abundance of wildlife at sunrise. Morning wake up is at 5.00 a.m., with your choice of tea or coffee. You leave camp by 5.20 a.m., shortly before sunrise. Mornings can get slightly chilly, especially during December and January. While Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka do provide a blanket, you are advised to have a cap and maybe a scarf.
Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka clients will explore the park well off the beaten track, taking them to some of the most beautiful places on earth, under the guidance of experienced drivers/naturalists, who are renowned for their deep understanding and knowledge of the parks and the amazing diversity of wildlife viewing that these unique park has to offer.
You will be back to camp for a leisurely breakfast, relax around camp or be taken on a stroll by our experienced trackers. After lunch, Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka will take you for the afternoon game drive. You will leave camp by around 3.30 p.m. on the afternoon safari, and usually return around 6.30 p.m., just in time for a sundowner.
The spirit of Kulu is camaraderie as much as it is adventure and a passion for wildlife. Guests are warmly invited to have a drink around a bonfire or in the lounge tent and mingle with guides and fellow guests. But if you choose a bit of solitude, that’s completely fine as well and you’re more than welcome to sip a drink on the deck of your tent until dinner is ready. Dinner is served between 7.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.
In the morning, you can choose between going on a safari or trekking a walk up the hill located at the back of the campsite that has a fantastic panoramic view of the Yala National Park. The walk provides a rare opportunity to learn interesting tips on the art of tracking, animal behavior, and offers a unique perspective for birding as well as photography.
Guests who choose to go on safari will leave camps at approximately 5:20 a.m. and will be back at camp by approximately 10.00 a.m. for breakfast. Check out is at 11.00 a.m. and Kulu Safari Sri Lanka will drive you to a pickup point to meet your chauffeur/guide.
A trekking session is offered to guests who wish to join. There will be a walk up the hill located at the back of the campsite, has a fantastic panoramic view of the Yala National Park.
