Accommodation level: Luxury

During the safari, you will stay at the Mara Sopa Lodge or similar accommodation in Maasai Mara, Kenya.

Located high on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge was one of the first safari lodges to be built in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, a reason why its gardens and trees are so lush and mature. All the buildings follow the design of traditional African round houses with conical roofs, and these stretch along the line of the hills with the impressively large public area buildings and the swimming pool at their centre.

Accommodations on safari are usually a combination of lodges and permanent or mobile tented camps. "In the bush", and miles from civilization, these luxury camp's and lodges are all unique and in amazing settings. Lodge rooms have complete bathroom amenities as do most permanent tented camps.

Mobile camps can have either private en-suite facilities or shared bathroom and shower tents. Unless you are in a major city, there will be no television or phones with outside lines. Electric lights running on generators are generally lit for a few hours in the early morning and from dark until 22:00 or 23:00.

Program

Day 1 - Nairobi to Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Depart from your hotel in Nairobi or from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in the morning and drive along the floor of the Rift Valley to Maasai Mara arriving at the Mara Sopa Lodge in the afternoon for lunch. Check in, relax, and get ready for the afternoon game drives followed by dinner and overnight stay at Mara Sopa Lodge or similar.

Maasai Mara is globally famous for its exceptional population of Masai lions, African leopards, and Tanzanian cheetahs, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the great migration.

Day 2 - Full-day Masai Mara to Mara River for migration safari

After breakfast, you will then head out with a picnic lunch to the Mara River, hoping to see a dramatic river crossing or two. It is quite an amazing sight to see the massed herds take a leap of faith into the Mara or Talek rivers with the Nile crocs lying in wait for them. Return to the Sopa Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 - Full-day Maasai Mara safari

You will spent full day exploring the park in search of the Big Five trailing the wildebeest migration. Morning and afternoon game drives will be offered. Optional hot air balloon safari can also be arranged at an extra cost of 450 USD per person.

The Mara offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been recorded here. You will easily see lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, buffalo, leopard, many kinds of antelopes, and elephant. It is in the Mara that perhaps the most spectacular event of the natural world takes place.

This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture. Following on their heels are the predators of the savannah which are the lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena, and vultures. You will return to the Sopa Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 - Masai Mara to Nairobi

You will have early morning pre-breakfast followed by a game drive until around 9:00 a.m. bidding goodbye to the Mara predators. You will be back to the lodge for the full break first then proceed to Nairobi arriving by evening where the safari ends. You will have your lunch on the way.
