Luxury tents

Set among tall, shady trees, with a seasonal river below, Buffalo Camp’s suites are ultra-luxurious tents that consistently delight guests. Dark wood and leather finishes add a nostalgic air, while oil lanterns illuminating the walkways at night create a wonderfully romantic ambiance.

Game drives

Two game drives a day are offered to all guests. Accompanied by a skilled ranger and tracker, you can expect to encounter a diverse range of animal and bird species. Since this is a Big Five reserve, encountering lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo is possible over a two-day safari.

While seeing big game is always exhilarating, there are many other smaller species that are also captivating, and birding enthusiasts will be delighted at the approximately 350 species of bird recorded on the reserve. Throughout the day, it’s likely you will see wildlife such as nyala antelope, Vervet monkeys or even a few of the Big Five.

Your guide will point out medicinal plants, insects, and birdlife along the way, and share traditional tracking skills such as using animal footprints and scat to identify animals. Kapama Private Game Reserve

Kapama Private Game Reserve occupies a vast area between the northern Drakensberg mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park, in the north-east of South Africa. It spans 13,000 hectares of the magnificent South African bushveld, teeming with wildlife, yet is ideally situated to receive fly-in guests of scheduled flights from the nearby Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit.

Situated in Limpopo province, an area renowned for its wildlife and superb safari destinations, Kapama Private Game Reserve is home to all the big game of Africa, with over 40 mammal species and 350 bird species. This equates to huge natural diversity and includes the famed dangerous Big Five of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Twice-daily game drives are conducted through the rolling savannah grasslands and riverine forests that make up this magnificent African reserve.

Arrival by airplane

The northern boundary of Kapama Private Game Reserve is a stone’s throw away from Eastgate Airport (also referred to as Hoedspruit Airport). This makes for easy guest transfers to Kapama’s lodges in game viewing vehicles. Airlink, as well as CemAir, operates daily flights from OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and regular flights from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to Eastgate Airport, which is situated near Hoedspruit. Kapama luxury travel

For the discerning traveler, Kapama Private Game Reserve offers guests the luxury of a direct fly-in option on their own branded PC12 plane. Guests can fly out of Johannesburg or Cape Town directly onto Kapama’s 1.5-kilometer tarred runway.

Driving directions from Johannesburg

  • Take either the N12 or the N4 from Johannesburg to eMalahleni and Middelburg.
  • Turn onto the R540 towards eMakhazeni, Emnotweni and Mashishing.
  • Emnotweni is set on the Highveld and is an ideal point for exploring the region. The village has a quaint atmosphere and is famous for its trout fishing, and is a good halfway or lunch stop on the way to Kapama Private Game Reserve.
  • From Mashishing, proceed on the R36 to Ohrigstad, and through the Strydom Tunnel to Hoedspruit.
  • This scenic drive through Mpumalanga takes in magnificent mountain landscapes and panoramic views – as you drive up the mountain passes onto the high escarpment, you’ll have sweeping vistas of the Lowveld down below.
  • At the Strydom Tunnel, roadside stalls sell ethnic curios from the area.
  • From Hoedspruit, take the R40 to Klaserie and continue until you reach the Kapama Private Game Reserve entrance on the left.

Driving directions from Pretoria

  • Take the N4 from Pretoria via eMalahleni (Witbank) and Middleburg towards Mbombela (Nelspruit).
  • Turn left on the R540 towards eMakhazeni (Belfast).
  • In the center of the town, turn right (there will be a Total garage on your left hand side then) to eMnotweni (Dullstroom) and then on to Mashishing (Lydenburg).
  • Pass-through Mashishing (Lydenburg) taking the R36 to Ohrigstad, through the Strijdom Tunnel to Hoedspruit.
  • Once through Hoedspruit, turn right at the T-junction onto the R40 to Klaserie / Bushbuck Ridge.
  • For Buffalo Camp, continue along the R40 (past the Eastgate Airport, turn off, don’t turn left) until you reach the Buffalo Camp main gate on your left-hand side.

Driving directions from Nelspruit

  • Proceed in the direction of White River on the R537.
  • After White River, take the R40 to Hazyview.
  • Follow this road until you reach a T-junction.
  • Turn left at the T-junction (you are still on the R40), drive through Hazyview.
  • At the four-way stop, continue straight on the R40 past Bosbokrand (Bushbuck Ridge) and Acornhoek.
  • After Acornhoek the R40, continue northwards towards Hoedspruit / Phalaborwa.
  • Approximately one kilometer before Klaserie, the R40 branches off to the right and is clearly marked.
  • Take the turnoff towards your right.
  • You will still be on the R40.
  • For Buffalo Camp, continue along the R40 until you reach the Buffalo Camp main gate on your right-hand side.

Driving directions from Graskop

  • This route takes you to Hoedspruit from Graskop via the Blyde River Canyon and is undoubtedly the most scenic route.
  • After leaving Graskop, proceed on the R532 and follow this road until it ends in a T-junction with the R36.
  • Turn right onto the R36 and continue over the Abel Erasmus Pass towards Hoedspruit.
  • The R36 becomes the R531 and then the R527 shortly before Hoedspruit.
  • Remain on the roads as mentioned.
  • In Hoedspruit, once crossing over a bridge over the railway line, the road stops at a four-way crossing.
  • Turn right onto the R40 towards Klaserie / Bushbuck Ridge.
  • For Buffalo Camp, continue along the R40 until you reach the Buffalo Camp main gate on your left-hand side.
