Accommodation

Jungle Retreat Wayanad have just a few rooms that you let out, and this gives ample privacy to the guests. This also ensures that the animals visiting the farm are not disturbed by humans. The rooms are basic, neat and clean, please don’t expect any sort of luxury such as TVs, Fridge and ACs, not that you’d need an AC, the temperature is almost always moderate round the year. Bathrooms are well appointed with running hot and cold water, you have electricity backup if the main grid fails. But it is all about the outdoors in Jungle Retreat Wayanad.

You have the jungle cottage which gives the best views of the farm, these are stand-alone cottages jutting out into the meadows. You have an unobstructed view of the watering-hole and the meadows from your balcony, which is where you are most likely to spend your time. It also has a large private sun-deck for you to soak in the sun and enjoy the star-lit sky at nights.

The twin cottage also has 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, and 1 balcony, ideal for a small family of 2 or 3. The twin cottages also have large, excellent balconies and it is made of stone. It has the largest rooms and the largest balconies as well.

For extended families Jungle Retreat Wayanad would recommend the Villa which has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 balconies all under one roof. The villa is at an elevated level and being close to the jungle, you should be able to feel the jungle and experience the sights and sounds right from your room itself.

Program

Day 1: Arrival day

  • Check-in at 1:00 p.m.

Enjoy a warm welcome, they'll take you to your room, you can relax, settle in with a farm-fresh welcome drink.

  • 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Lunch in the outdoor gazebo.

Enjoy veg and non-veg delicacies served during lunch in the outdoor gazebo overlooking the meadows. You are very likely to see spotted deer walking around in the meadows while you are having lunch. Keep your camera handy as you never know what is likely to walk in to the grasslands.

  • 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Explore, relax in the farm.

Visit the infotainment center and read up on the local flora, fauna and tribes. You will get ample information about the various tribes in this area and you'll also get an idea about the animals and birds you are likely to see in Wayanad. Or you can just put your feet up and relax in the farm, enjoy the view from your balcony.

  • 4:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Evening tea/coffee served in your balcony.

This is probably the best time to see animals in the farm. By this time the elephants and gaur should be in the meadows coming to the watering-hole for a drink and then to graze around. This is also the time when the resident wild-dog pack is active, and there is a chance that they'd come out for a drink. You can either sit in your balcony and enjoy the view or walk to the watchtower to see the animals up close without disturbing them. Enjoy the views as you sip on your coffee/tea.

  • 4:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Visit the animal farm.

This one is a favorite with both children and adults! You have a small farm with rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks, swans, hen and more, and you can feed the animals, watch them at close quarters in the enclosed area. A great way to settle in, before you embark on exciting wilderness related adventures.

  • 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Malabar giant squirrel walk.

Take a small trek on the road to see the Giant Malabar Squirrels and its nesting trees. These squirrels are the largest in the world, the males are close to 1 meter long, covered in dark maroon fur. The trained guide would take you for the leisurely walk explaining what you are likely to see.

  • 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Camp-fire at night near the jungle stream.

Drive through the jungle at night to a remote jungle stream, enjoy camp-fire on the banks, experience the sights and sounds of the jungle.

During the drive, there is every chance of seeing the animals on the road in their natural surroundings and the river bank is an ideal place to soak in the jungle, while listening to the in-house naturalist talk about his experiences in the wild. You may want to carry warm clothing as you sit under the starlit sky, enjoying the camp-fire, listening to the jungle around you. (Weather Permitting)

  • 8:30 to 10:00 p.m.

Dinner in Jungle Retreat Wayanad.

The dinner will be served in the outdoor gazebo, will have both veg and non-veg delicacies. You are very likely to be dining with elephants, gaur, and deer grazing in the meadows on the other side of the electric fence. You should be able to observe them in the moonlight as you enjoy your dinner.

Day2:

  • 6:00 to 8:00 a.m.

Visit Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

You will serve morning coffee / tea in your balcony. You recommend an early start to the day, early morning are the best time for wildlife sightings in the meadows and the birds will be most active then as well. Gear up for the safari drive inside Tholpetty Sanctuary, it is best to wear earthly, dull color clothes such as dull browns or greens. Take your camera, binoculars as well, you will get a lot of photo opportunities. You will arrange a jeep to take you from the farm to Tholpetty forest check post.

Private vehicles are not allowed inside the forest, so can take a forest jeep (to be paid extra) to experience the safari drive inside the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary which is famous for Elephants, Gaur, Tigers and Leopards. You will be accompanied by a trained guide during the drive. Once the 1 hour safari is done, the vehicle will be waiting for you to bring you back to the farm and there is every chance of seeing animals during the drive to and from the farm as it is through the jungle.

  • 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.

Sumptuous Breakfast will be served in the outdoor gazebo.

The breakfast will include continental and Indian dishes. As always, you never know what will walk out into the meadows, maybe it an otter coming to fish in the fishing pond near the gazebo or it may be the serpent eagle hovering around or maybe there are elephants enjoying a bath in the watering-hole; it is best to have your camera ready just in case you get lucky with sightings.

  • 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Guided Jungle Awareness Trek (3km) around the farm with the naturalist to experience sights and sounds of the wild.

You highly recommend that you wear earth-colored clothes such as dull browns or forest green while going for the trek. Do bring sunscreen with high protection factor, wear a comfortable hat, and don't use perfumes before the trek. A good trekking shoes will come in handy for the trek, get your camera charged and ready and don't forget your binoculars. The farm is surrounded by protected reserves on all sides and there is every chance that you will see animals (direct signs or indirect) during your trek. The naturalist will explain the sights and sounds you are likely to experience and this trek will definitely give you an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the Indian jungles.

  • 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

  • 2:30 to 7:00 p.m.

2 hour safari drive inside Nagarahole National Park arranged by Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR).

Gear up for the safari drive inside Nagarahole National Park, it is best to wear earthly, dull color clothes such as dull browns or greens. Take your camera, binoculars as well, you will get a lot of photo opportunities. You will arrange a jeep to take you through the jungle to Nagarahole National Park. It is a 40 minute drive through the jungle and once there, the JLR vehicle will be waiting for you (to be paid extra) and take the safari inside the park.

Nagarahole is also known as the Tiger capital of the world, since it has the highest number and highest density of wild Tigers anywhere in the world. Once the 2 hour safari is done, the jeep will be waiting for you and you have every chance of seeing animals during the drive back to the farm which is through the jungle. JLR safaris are rated as the best safari drives in South India and you'll be accompanied by trained professional guides from the forest department. Including the up-and-down drive from the farm, you'll be spending close to 5 hours exploring Nagarahole National Park.

  • 7:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Day3:

  • 6:30 to 7:00 a.m.

Enjoy the early morning coffee/tea from your balcony.

  • 7:30 to 8:00 a.m.

  • 8:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Brahmagiri trek - all day deep jungle trek.

Brahmagiri peak is at an elevation of 2500 ft and it is best to wear earth colored light cotton clothes, full sleeves for this trek. Don't forget sunscreen, a good hat, and good walking shoes will help immensely as well. Take your camera, binoculars as well, you will get a lot of photo opportunities. You will arrange a jeep to take you to the starting point of the Brahmagiri trek which is just 5 minutes’ drive from the farm.

You can hire a forest guide from there (to be paid extra) and he will take you deep into the jungle/mountain. It is a 12Km trek up and down and we'll arrange packed lunch for you to carry as the entire trek will be through the jungle. It is a very scenic trek and you are likely to see animals during the trek. The guide, mostly a tribal guide, will keep you safe.

  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Guided Birdwatching Trek (3km).

A good trekking shoes will come in handy for the trek, get your camera charged and ready and don't forget your binoculars.

A 3km around the farm with the naturalist in search of the various types of birds in and around this area. The activity is split into 2 halves. The first hour is spent on foot looking for birds and the 2nd hour is spent in the bird blind where the birds are likely to come. The camouflaged bird blind gives a great opportunity for great photos.

  • 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Location

Jungle Retreat Wayanad is a 10-acre farm surrounded by jungle on all sides and you have daily wildlife sightings right inside the farm itself. You have regular sightings of elephants, gaurs, deer, wild boar and the resident pack of wild-dogs (Dholes) come over for a drink during sunny evenings. It is also not uncommon to hear the roar of the Tiger or the Leopard; the unique selling point is Wildlife – wildlife without having to go in search of it.

The farm is at an elevation of 800 meters MSL and the forest type is predominantly tropical evergreen, moist deciduous and dry deciduous forests. In the north and East you share the border with Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary, Nagarahole National Park to the west, and you share the Southern border with the Brahmagiri mountain ranges. You are bang in the middle of 3 protected reserves and as you know, Nagarahole is also called as the Tiger capital of the world because it has the highest density and highest number of Tigers anywhere in the world. You should also be able to see at least 50 different types of birds from the farm itself, needless to say, it is a birder’s paradise as well.

The unique location gives you the feeling that you are camping out in the jungle, but in complete comfort and safety. For nature lovers, ours is an ideal place to stay in Wayanad.

Wayanad is blessed by Mother Nature in every sense of the word, there is beauty in abundance wherever you look. Jungle Retreat Wayanad is situated in the north of Wayanad which is not only rich in wildlife but it also surrounded by various points of interests. The following are less than 30 minutes’ drive from the farm:

  • Thirunelli Temple: A 5000 year old temple which is also an architectural wonder, perhaps the oldest temple in India.
  • Papanashini Stream: Often referred to as the Ganges of the south, believed that a dip here would wash away the sins
  • Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary: Wildlife safari in one of the least explored and best sanctuaries for wildlife sightings
  • Nagarahole National Park: Enjoy the wildlife safari in one of the best National Parks in India. It is also called as the Tiger capital of the world due to the highest density and number of wild Tigers in the park
  • Brahmagiri Trek: All day deep jungle trek (12KM total) accompanied by a forest guard to the peak of the mighty Brahmagiri mountain ranges
  • Iruppu waterfalls: A beautiful 50 feet waterfall set in the jungle, you can swim under the waterfall
