Although the hike can be physically demanding, the anticipation of the exciting experience ahead is amazing, and the beauty of the gorilla forest and its inhabitants is fascinating.

One of Africa’s major highlights is when you encounter these gentle apes. It is a humbling experience to stand just meters from man’s distant cousins as they eat rest, play, and bond with their young ones.

Follow the mountain gorillas as they range freely in the impenetrable forest, and discover their gorgeous natural habitual and the many species they share it with. You are allowed an hour with the gorillas before finally sloping down back to your lodge.

If your trek was relatively short, you may have a guided nature walk around the lodge and the surrounding communities in the evening at a supplement of 35 USD per person.

Return to the lodge where you will enjoy dinner with your fellow travelers before getting a good night’s rest for tomorrow's safari adventure.

You may opt for Gorilla Habituation on a supplement of 800 USD per person – here you will be sure of meeting and spending enough time with the Gorillas.

Don’t forget to carry your rain gear, packed lunch, plenty of water, gloves, hat, and waterproof bag for protection of your camera in case of rain.

  • Activities: Gorilla trekking
  • Included: 1 gorilla permit per person, full board meals

Gorilla Trekking Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Wake early for a hearty breakfast to give you the energy needed for gorilla trekking. Before 8:00 am, report to the ranger station for registration and a talk by one of the rangers. The guides will then take you through the bush, pushing your way through the undergrowth, to track the gorillas. (Please note this trek can take from 30 minutes to 5-6 hours). A reasonable degree of fitness is required, as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes.

Sit in the forest among the gorillas, listening to them ‘talk’ to one another, and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male, the Silverback. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense rainforest knowing you are with a few of the last remaining mountain gorillas. It's amazing to think there are only about 650 of these beautiful creatures left.

Day 11

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to Mgahinga Forest to trek the golden monkeys. There are up to 4000 Golden Monkeys living in the shadows of the Virunga Volcanoes – no accurate census has been taken but it is known that they are not reproducing at a rate that will mean an increase in the population of Golden Monkeys.

They live in the Bamboo Forest zones of the Virunga Volcanoes and you do have to be in reasonable shape to hike up to their habitat which is a most rewarding experience. One of the families has been habituated which means that they are now used to human beings without scurrying off into the forest when humans approach.

You will spend 1-3 hours in the morning where you will be guided to the bamboo forest by a guide, one thing of note is that the size of your Golden Monkey tracking group will only be six in number. Have lunch before transferring back to your lodge for dinner and rest.

Alternatively, instead of Golden Monkeys trekking, you may opt to take the Batwa trail where you will be immersed in the cultural experience of the Batwa people (Pygmies) who used to stay in the forest and will show you the caves where they used to stay and will show you how they used to live.

  • Activities: Golden Monkeys, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Included: 1 Golden Monkey permit per person, full board meals

Day 12

After breakfast, drive to Lake Bunyonyi which has breathtaking scenery. Spend the night overlooking Uganda's deepest lake, where you may try your hand at paddling a dugout canoe or eating freshwater crayfish.

  • Included: Canoeing, full board meals

Day 13

After breakfast, at 8 a.m., you will travel to Lake Mburo National Park, the smallest national park in Uganda. Though being small, it has a lot to offer! Centered on a series of swamp-fringed lakes its birdlife is very rich. The green acacia woodland harbors wildlife like Zebra, warthog, Eland, and Impala, not to mention the lake itself, which is home to schools of hippos and crocodiles! Furthermore, the Uganda Wildlife Authority recently brought 15 giraffes from Murchison Falls to Lake Mburo.

You will arrive at the lodge in time for lunch. Later at 4 p.m., enjoy the boat ride on Lake Mburo and get quite close to the crocs and hippos. As you return to your Lodge, you may have an evening game drive.

  • Included: Game drive, park entrance fees, boat cruise, vehicle entrance fees, full board meal plan

Day 14: End of the itinerary

After breakfast, have a safari walk under the escort of an armed ranger. The Kopjes are particularly interesting with the camouflage kilspringers and topis. Due to cattle herding in the area, it is amusing to see zebra grazing alongside the long-horned Ankole cattle peacefully. It is exciting to approach wildlife at such close range.

Alternatively, you may choose to go for a mountain bike safari (at an extra cost of 25 USD per person for 2 hours) or a horseback riding safari in the park (95 USD per person for 2 hours).

Later, leisurely drive back to Kampala with a stopover at the Equator where you will have an opportunity to stand in two hemispheres at the same time. Take some photos, then another stop over at the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers. If time allows, you will be able to watch the ceremonial drums being crafted using methods passed down through the generations.

Arrive in the afternoon and be transferred to Entebbe Airport to catch your flight to your next destination. Please note your flight should be in the late evening.
