During the jungle expedition, you will have an overnight stay in a jungle cabin.

Day 1: Napo River - Arajuno River

After having breakfast in Tena, you will leave by bus to Ahuano, which takes approximately one hour. In Ahuano, you will board a motor canoe (equipped with life jackets) and float down the Napo River first and later continue on the Arajuno River. A short walk will lead you to the Sacha Samay Museum, where you will see a variety of handicrafts, ceramics, traditional natural hunting and fishing tools, as well as different kinds of traps. You will also have the possibility to try to shoot in the air with a traditional blow tube.

After having visited the Sacha Samay Museum, lunch will be served. You will continue your trip on the Arajuno River in the canoe and it will be possible for those who want, to swim in the crystalline water of this calm and safe river. Later on, you will arrive at amaZOOnico, which is an animal rescue center. Here, you will observe an enormous variety of animal species:

  • Reptiles: caimans, turtles, boas, etc.
  • Bird species: wild turkeys, trumpeters, toucans, parrots, parakeets, owls, etc.
  • Mammals: different monkey species, tapir, coati, capybara, ocelot, and peccary

AmaZOOnico is one of the few places where you can observe such a great variety of wildlife species; many of them are threatened with extinction. After the visit of the amaZOOnico, you will return to Ahuano by canoe. There is also the possibility to visit a balsa wood or ceramic workshop where typical Kichwa handicrafts are produced. Afterward, you will stay in a jungle cabin and have dinner there.

Day 2: Rainforest Hike

After the breakfast, you will start your hike in the tropical rainforest which will take three to four hours. Your native guide will explain you the flora and fauna of the rainforest and tell you how to survive in the jungle with the help of indigenous knowledge of the Kichwa culture. Later, you will have lunch and take a break.

Afterward, there are different options on how to continue your program. You can visit a Kichwa family, prepare your own chocolate from cacao beans, go for swimming in the river, or make handicrafts. Finally, you will continue floating up the Napo River where you can take the bus going back to Tena.
