The red-shanked douc (Pygathrix nemaeus)

The red-shanked douc (Pygathrix nemaeus) is a species of Old World monkey, among the most colorful of all primates. This monkey is sometimes called the "costumed ape" for its extravagant appearance. From its knees to its ankles, it sports maroon-red "stockings" and it appears to wear white forearm length gloves. Its attire is finished with black hands and feet. The golden face is framed by a white ruff which is considerably fluffier in males. The eyelids are a soft powder blue. The tail is white with a triangle of white hair at the base. Males of all ages have a white spot on both sides of the corners of the rump patch as well as red and white genitals.

The Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis)

The Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis) is a highly threatened Old World monkey found in limestone forests in Vietnam, primarily in the Quảng Bình Province. A recent survey discovered a small population living in the Quảng Trị Province. Contrary to its name, it is not known from the Hà Tĩnh Province. The local Van Kieu minority refer to this lutung as the 'Con Cung' which roughly translates as "black, cliff-dwelling monkey with a long tail". It resembles the closely related François' langur (T. francoisi), but its white cheek-stripes typically extend behind the ears onto the nape (there are significant individual variations, however) and the overall black color is non-glossy and has a brownish tinge.

Included excursions

  • Botanical Garden visit
  • Paradise Cave visit
  • Swimming at a beautiful waterfall

The wildlife tour will take place in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam. The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is considered one of the most biologically diverse places in the world and is home to many endemic species. It is also considered as one of the best hot spots of biodiversity in the world.

Wildlife Rescue Center

As a department of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, the Wildlife Rescue Center was built in 2007 sponsored by Cologne Zoo, Germany. This center only focuses on keeping the animals short-term and finding ways to introduce them back into nature. The Rescue Center has saved more than 1,000 animals over the last eight years, giving each of them another chance at life and helping to repopulate native species back into Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.

Cologne Zoo Project has supported this center since 2007 and it was handed over to the national park in May 2013. After more than ten years working in this region to help the park with budget and knowledge, it was time to hand it back to the people who will manage in the future. 2013 was a new chapter for the National Park Management Board, especially the staff working with all the rescued animals. When the project finished their work in Phong Nha, it meant that the Rescue Center lost its external funding which introduced new challenges. Cologne Zoo Project funded food, medication, tools, and maintenance; so without it The Rescue Center was left with a small budget from the government, which is not enough. The Wildlife Rescue Center struggled as the medication supply ran low, conditions of the cages, and semi-wild enclosures slowly decayed, and food had to be rationed. The Wildlife Rescue Center is the only one in Central Vietnam and because of the lack of funds, confiscated wildlife had to be turned away. This is when Hai realized he could do something for the animals and all the people involved in the Wildlife Rescue Center.

Hai created Hai’s Eco Conservation Tours in order to bring in some money to support the Center and provide for its residents. By creating a tour everyone benefits: for travelers, people could see what is being done in and for Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, learn about how their choice to tour with Hai has a positive impact, and learn about the local flora and fauna; for locals, more job opportunities and pride in their work; for wildlife, a safe haven

The Wildlife Rescue Center was one of the biggest reasons they created Hai’s Eco Conservation Tour. Due to budget constraints, it has struggled for a number of years; money is needed to buy food, medication, tools, to make improvements on semi-wild enclosures, and to pay staff. All wildlife at the rescue center are victims of illegal trade and habitat loss. There are non-governmental organizations working to stop these illegal activities but there are always more animals in need of a safe haven. Hai’s Eco Conservation Tours support the Rescue Center financially and brings awareness to this significant issue.
