Day 1: Immerse in Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in the heart of the Amazon Jungle

After arriving at the meeting point in Lago Agrio, where Green Forest Ecolodge awaits you with a welcome breakfast to begin your trip to the Amazon rainforest. After this, the transport will pick you up, the same will happen with the people that arrive directly to the airport of Lago Agrio to direct you towards the entrance to the Cuyabeno Reserve (Cuyabeno Bridge River) for about two hours.

Lunch will be served and immediately you will start your exploration into the Amazon jungle of Ecuador by boat. In the canoe ride, be ready to hear the sounds of the wildlife, while you watch the scenery changing along the Cuyabeno River waters and between trees. In this boat trip, you will be able to watch the birds, monkeys, and other jungle creatures, accompanied by a guide who will provide information on how the animals and plant interact and balance the life within the Cuyabeno Ecosystem in which they coexist. Finally, arrive at the Ecolodge, you will settle in each of the cabins. After dinner, the native guide gives you a briefing introduction of the activities for the next days in Cuyabeno National Park.

Day 2: Explore the Ecuadorian Amazon Jungle at Cuyabeno

On the morning before breakfast, you can hear the noise of birds flying around the bungalows in the ecolodge. After breakfast, you continue upriver to start a trekking on the banks of the Cuyabeno River, where you can see different species of plants, huge trees, aquatic vines, orchids, medicinal herbs, and a large number of wild animals and birds of the Amazon jungle. After serving lunch, you will have time to swim and relax in Laguna Grande while watching the pink and grey dolphins play on the water. Once you have enjoyed one of the best sunsets of your life, you will return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, you will embark on an exciting canoe ride where you will see the famous black caimans of the Amazon. During this journey, you will hear the mysterious noises of the forest. This is an experience you will never forget.

Day 3: Discover the legends of the Siona Community

Early in the morning, you will enjoy breakfast to travel by canoe to the Siona Indigenous Community, where you can interact and learn about their traditions, culture, and customs. In the same time, you will learn to elaborate the Casabe, a typical dish of this ancestral tribe. Lunch will be served in the community and finally meet the Shaman, it will make you perceive and interact with their spiritual world, channeling their energies, visionary, healing and divinatory skills acquired over the years. As well as you will also have time to acquire the beautiful handicrafts made by the locals.

Day 4: From Cuyabeno back to civilization

Early in the morning, you will do birdwatching down the river, as well enjoy a completely fascinating sunrise. After that activity, Green Forest Ecolodge will serve breakfast and embark on a canoe ride on the Cuyabeno River back to civilization. The transportation will pick you up from the entrance of the Cuyabeno National Park towards Lago Agrio (meeting point) for later continue with the usual trip in Ecuador. End of the services.

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

Several flagship species of Ecuadorian fauna and flora can be found in this region, including harpy eagle, Amazon tapir, white-whiskered-spider monkey, dusky-titi monkey, Black-girdled Barbet, paradise tanager, crested owl, spangled cotinga, great potoo, Attalea Maripa, black caiman, and macaws. This area has been highlighted by the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment as vital for conservation.

The reserve is divided into geographical areas, each with its own specific function, such as tourism, conservation, research and monitoring, by the environmental office of Ecuador - by a team whose members have expertise in different areas, including biology, management, and education. The forest reserve where the ecolodge is in the heart of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, a very important Amazon conservation area covering 603,380 hectares (1,490,000 acres).

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by bus

The bus trip from Quito to Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja) takes approximately eight hours, and the buses depart from Quitumbe bus terminal in the south of the city. If you don’t want to waste a full day travelling, there is a lot of options for night buses that can be taken. Shuttle buses can also be taken from Quito to Lago Agrio, which can be found in the Mariscal area of the city. If you rather take the shuttle van service just contact Green Forest Ecolodge to help you arrange your seat.

Most of the route from Baños to Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja city) takes you about seven-eight hours making it an easy and comfortable drive. Including some stops for refreshments, for the convenience of your journey, there are lots of buses heading to the meeting point (Lago Agrio) during the night, the most famous and comfortable bus company that goes there is Transportes Baños. The best way to get there is taking a night bus that goes to Coca and then switches to a different bus that goes to Lago Agrio. Buses from Coca to Lago Agrio goes every 15 minutes from 04:00.

If you consider saving some money from Guayaquil, you can opt to take the bus, there are different options for getting to Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja City) where is located in the meeting point. There is a straight bus coming from Guayaquil to Lago Agrio which is Transportes Baños bus company. Or if you miss this bus you can catch the bus that goes to Quito and then from Quito take the bus to Lago Agrio which is approximately eight hours. Remember, if you don’t want to waste a full day travelling there is a lot of options for night buses that can be taken. Shuttle buses can also be taken from Quito to Lago Agrio, which can be found in the Mariscal area of the city.

If you could not make to the buses heading to Lago Agrio from Quito or Baños, another great option is taking a bus to Coca. There are lots of buses heading all the time to this city and takes about seven-eight hours to get there. Once you get to Coca, you have to catch a different bus to Lago Agrio that normally takes one hour and 45 minutes. Remember if you don’t want to waste a full day travelling there is a lot of options of night buses that can be taken.

If you are willing to visit Cuyabeno from Colombia or getting to Colombia from Cuyabeno, there are several buses heading from Lago Agrio to Tulcan or viceversa. Tulcan is the closest city to the border with Colombia and takes about six until seven hours to get there. The bus companies that travel from Lago Agrio to Tulcan is Petrolera Bus.

If you are coming from San Agustin or from another point from Colombia, get a bus to Puerto Asis and once you get Puerto Asis you can take a bus to La Hormiga (two hours ride) and then, from La Hormiga, there are pick up trucks that take you to the border for 3 USD. From the border, there are taxis or also a bus company called Putumayo that takes you to Lago Agrio (30 minutes) which is completely safe.
