Amboseli are the plains below Mt. Kilimanjaro. The waters from melted snow drain down the mountain under lava flows and surface into Amboseli National Park creating a green belt of swampland amidst dusty plains. Here, hippos, elephants, and bird life can be seen against the backdrop of the magnificent snow-capped mountain. This gives you a taste of the exciting safari that later goes to Lake Manyara in Tanzania, thereafter, to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire in that order, winding it up in Arusha.
The accommodations will be at:
Set on 200 acres of private land and with a rustic charm all of its own, the lodge nestles in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro which, at almost six thousand meters, is Africa’s highest and most famous snow-capped mountain.
Amboseli Sopa Lodge is set within mature wooded gardens with a wide variety of trees and plants which include thorn trees, acacias, fragrant frangipanis, colorful bougainvillea, and giant cacti which all thrive in these surroundings. The gardens are also home to numerous species of birds, as well as monkeys, mongooses, squirrels, duikers, the occasional gazelle and, once in a while, even an ever inquisitive leopard.
Rustic, well spaced cottages meander through the vast expanse of the mature gardens and house the eighty three guest rooms. These are all brightly decorated with Maasai themed wall murals, and each room has been purposely built to contain either one or two queen sized beds, as well as a veranda.
The lodge consists of nineteen bandas (banda is the Swahili word for a single standing house, chalet, or bungalow), each one with a private veranda. Amboseli National Park is famous for its large herd of free-range elephant. Amboseli has a mixed topography of acacia trees, plains, swampy marshes, and rocky thorn bushes. This diversity, along with a long dry season, ensures excellent game viewing of the large concentrations of African animals living in their natural habitat.
Today will be a full day of game viewing in the park. Amboseli National Park is in southern Kenya and located at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. It’s known for its large elephant herds and views of the immense Mount Kilimanjaro, across the border in Tanzania. Observation Hill offers panoramas of the peak and the park’s plains and swamps.
The snows of the mountain form a majestic backdrop to one of Kenya's most popular spectacular displays of wildlife - giraffe, zebra, lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, cheetah, buffalo, hundreds of bird species, and a host of plains game, creating Kenya's most sought after photographer’s paradise. The western section is dominated by the vast Lake Amboseli, which is dry outside of the rainy season.
Dinner and overnight will be at Amboseli Sopa Lodge.
After breakfast leave the camp / lodge in Amboseli National Park for the last game drive as you leave the park for the Namanga border post for immigration formalities (you can get your visas for Tanzania for 50 USD) and arrive in Arusha to drive to Lake Manyara National Park for lunch at Lake Manyara camp, followed by afternoon game drive in search of lions on trees. In addition to this peaceful setting, Lake Manyara’s main attractions are its rich bird life, tree climbing lions and its hippos, which you can see at a closer range than many other places. Lake Manyara also hosts thousands of flamingos at certain times of the year and has diverse vegetation ranging from savannah, to marshes and acacia woodland, enabling a variety of wildlife habitats including butterflies.
You will have an early morning game drive in Lake Manyara followed by breakfast then proceed to Serengeti National Park viewing game enroute (Olduvai Gorge) on your way to the campsite / lodge for lunch followed by afternoon game drive. Serengeti is Africa’s most famous and Tanzania’s largest park covering 14,736 sq. km and is adjoining with the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. With a wildebeest population of about 2 million and several other hoofed species (which include zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, topi, Grant's gazelle, kongoni, eland, Kirk’s dik dik, klipspringer, roan, oryx, oribi, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe, and warthog), the Serengeti is sure to attract a string of prey such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, golden jackals, and bat-eared foxes. Elephants are relatively scarce and the few remaining black rhinoceros are restricted to the Moru Koppies area.
The Serengeti also offers rewarding bird viewing with ostrich and kori bustard being common, a variety of larks, finches, and raptors can be seen but the most distinctive small bird is the lilac-breasted roller.
After breakfast, with picnic lunch proceed for a full day game drive, viewing the fantastic gnu migration from Masai Mara with predators following at close range. Return to the Seronera Campsite for dinner and overnight.
The term ‘Serengeti’ means endless plains in the Maasai language. In the central plains, there are carnivores like leopard, hyena, and cheetah. This park is normally the scene of the annual migration of the wildebeest and zebras, which occurs between Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. Eagles, flamingoes, duck, geese, and vultures are among the birds that can be seen in the park.
After an early breakfast and Serengeti game drive, head to Ngorongoro Crater and on arrival, descend 2,000 ft (670 m) into the crater floor for a full afternoon crater tour with a break for lunch at Ngoitoktok Springs' picnic site. Black manned lions, rhinos, buffaloes, elephants, and other grazing animals abound. Go for an evening game drive and return to Ngorongoro wildlife campsite or Simba Campsite for dinner and overnight.
Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s biggest whole volcanic caldera at 8,300 sq km and is arguably the most stunning arena. It is frequently described as one of the wonders of the world, not only because of its geological magnificence, but also because it serves as an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s largest populations of large mammals.
After breakfast, leave Ngorongoro Crater with a picnic lunch and drive to Tarangire National Park. You will have lunch enroute. Proceed on a game drive. The park has an atmosphere of remoteness and has a good number of monkeys, hornbills, pelicans, and herons among others. Dinner and overnight will be at the Tarangire campsite.
