Flame Tree Village Hotel

On your first night, you will stay at Flame Tree Village Hotel. Featuring free Wi-Fi throughout the property, Flame Tree Village offers accommodation in Kigali. The hotel has an outdoor pool and terrace, and guests can enjoy a meal at the restaurant or a drink at the bar.

Mutanda Lake Resort

During your second and third night, you will stay at Mutanda Lake Resort. Mutanda Lake Resort is spectacularly located on a private peninsula stretching into Lake Mutanda. With small islands dotting the surrounding lake and a backdrop of misty volcanoes in nearby Rwanda and Congo, this setting never fails to impress visitors. The main building where the restaurant is located resembles a Swiss chalet with an African touch.

It is the perfect place to enjoy a sun downer on the veranda watching otters visiting the shore or to cuddle up next to the fire place. Mutanda Lake Resort offers most likely the best view in Uganda! Perched on a peninsula in Lake Mutanda in the shadow of the Virunga Mountain Range, Mutanda Lake Resort offers comfortable accommodation combined with the most beautiful views on planet earth. Activities on the lake are organized by the lodge and the lake is safe to swim as it is bilharzia-free.

The resort is spaciously set up on a three and a half acres private peninsula stretching into Lake Mutanda. The 13 cottages are built on a wooden platform, each with private veranda and an en-suite bathroom. Mutanda Lake Resort offers a single, double or twin, family, or triple rooms with comfortable beds and mosquito nets.

Enjoy yourself with a four-day trip in Rwanda and Uganda. Other than the multiple amazing views you will get to see, you will also get the chance to enjoy a gorilla tracking experience and see the chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

Day 1: Airport pick up

A representative of Flame Tree Village will be at Kigali International Airport (KGL) to pick you up from your flight. Depending on your arrival time, you may be able to visit some of Kigali’s craft markets to browse amongst the pottery, carvings, batik, weaving, sculpture, musical instruments, leather, and fabrics on offer.

Prepare to use your haggling skills! All activities and purchases today are at your own cost. Your accommodation is in a quite suburb of Kigali in the newly build Flame tree village. This hotel will make you feel right at home. The journey will take approximately 15 minutes. You will be staying in Flame Tree Village for the night. No meals included for the day.

Day 2: Transfer to Bwindi

Today after breakfast, you will cross the border and transfer to Lake Mutanda in the south-western part of Uganda. It is close to the borders with Rwanda and Congo. You will cross a beautiful part of the country often referred to as “the Switzerland of Africa”.

You will see a great countryside, bamboo forest, and have great views over the Virunga Mountains. The journey will take approximately around three and a half hours. You will be staying in Mutanda Lake Resort. Today’s meal plan includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 3: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Today is the day. You will encounter one of Bwindi’s endangered mountain gorillas. For most people, this is the absolute highlight of their tour in Uganda. The gorillas you track belong to one of nine habituated family groups who can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day.

The time taken to track the gorillas can be as few as two hours to as many as seven hours. Once the gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them.

Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with Uganda’s very own “Gorillas in the Mist”. The journey will take approximately around one hour each way. You will stay at Mutanda Lake Resort for the night. Today’s meal plan includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 4: Return to Kigali

You will have early breakfast and return to Kigali. Depending on your departure flight, you can visit the Genocide Memorial and Education Centre, which opened in 2004. It is a dignified tribute to the victims, including a poignant Children’s Memorial and a detailed description of the darkest hour in Rwanda's recent history in time to catch your flight back home.

Your guide will take you to the airport in time for your flight home. Please note that this is only possible when your flight departs from Kigali at 4 p.m. or later. If you need another night in Kigali, Gorilla Link Tours will be happy to make a booking for you. Today’s journey will take approximately around three hours. Today’s meal plan includes breakfast.

Included excursions

During this safari trip, you will go on a gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

This safari trip will take place in Rwanda and Uganda.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park boasts both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. It is the only forest in Africa that can make this claim. It also hosts five other species of primates, 113 species of mammals, over 200 species of butterflies, and 360 species of birds.

Lake Mutanda

Lake Mutanda is a small freshwater lake in Uganda. The lake is located in Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda, approximately 20 kilometers north of the town of Kisoro, where the district headquarters are located. It is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain Range, at an altitude of 1,800 meters. The three volcanoes within the range, that are partly located in Uganda, namely Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Gahinga, can be viewed from Lake Mutanda.

Situated between Kisoro town, Mgahinga, and Bwindi National Parks, the resort makes a perfect base for gorilla trackers, volcano hikers, bird lovers, as well as those looking for a secluded place in nature. The cuisine is among the best in Uganda.

Things to do (optional)

Bird sundowner for 35 USD by motorboat and 20 USD by canoe

Contemplate your day as you enjoy a nice drink whilst listening to the engaging traditional guitar and relax watching birds.

Climb Mount Mahavura for 60 USD

Seen from all over the Kisoro district, Mount Muhavura truly acts as a guide. Towering above the land, this typical cone shaped volcano provides some of the best views in Uganda. On a clear day, one can see all the other Virunga volcanoes, Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi, and the peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. Muhavura does not have the thick forest that Mgahinga and Sabinyo offer.

Much of the climb is gradual incline up a rocky surface covered by grasses and small shrubs. The low vegetation gives you excellent views of the area throughout the day. At the top about 4,127 meters high, you are awarded with fine views over Congo and Rwanda, and a clear crater lake about 36 meters wide. Look out for scarlet-tufted malachite sun birds among the giant lobelias.

Climb Mount Sanbiyo for 60 USD

Mount Sabinyo offers three challenging peaks to climb. The trail takes you up a ridge along the eastern side of peak one. If you wish to continue, the climb to peak two involves walking a ridge with breath taking drops into the gorges of Rwanda and Uganda. Finally, the hike up to peak three is steep with several ladders and much scrambling.

You are sure to get your hands dirty en route to peak three. On top of peak three with 3669 meters high, you will be in Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo at the same time! The Sabinyo hike takes you through all different vegetation belts, and you have good chances of seeing Golden Monkeys, Duikers, Rwenzori Turaco, and sun birds.

Explore Batwa Trail and Garama Cave for 80 USD

A new tourism trail, result of a collaboration between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the United Organisation for Batwa Development in Uganda, is helping the indigenous Batwa pygmy people to keep their culture alive, following their eviction from the forests of southwest Uganda more than two decades ago. The Batwa are Uganda’s traditionally forest-dwelling pygmy people.

About a century ago, there was a conflict between the Batwa and the Bantu speaking people in the region. The Bantu tried to expel the Batwa people from the area, so they hideout in Garama Cave. The Bantu had no idea there was a hidden cave in the forest and therefore could not find the crafty Batwa.

The guide will explain how the Batwa lived and fought out of this cave. The cave is 342 meters in length and 14 meters deep, and is now only inhabited by bats. The walk to and from the cave passes through mountain woodland with plenty of opportunity to enjoy the scenery or watch birds.

Golden monkey tracking for 90 USD for regular tracking and 140 USD for habituation tracking.

Mgahinga forest national park provides the best site to encounter wild golden monkeys in their natural environment. The park also rewards the presence amidst the three of the mighty virunga ranges in Uganda. Trekking golden monkeys in their bamboo forest of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is unforgettable since it also rewards visitors the view of different bird, unique tree species, butterflies, and the beautiful mountainous relief among others.

Mgahinga is among the smaller parks with many different activities like Gorilla trekking, birding, mountain climbing, cave exploration, Batwa community visit or also known as the keepers of the forest. Mgahinga golden monkeys are habituated and are used to human beings. Therefore, they are not harmful to human beings. However, the visitors should be able to take photos at the fastest speed.

Hike in Sabinyo Gorge for 70 USD

This hike takes you deep into Sabinyo’s lush gorge. It is moist, with thick vegetation and there is a beautiful moss-lined stream along the walk. This trail reveals the true height of Mount Sabinyo. At the end of the gorge you find yourself looking straight up at the peaks.

With the peaks up and a small waterfall by your side, the end of the gorge is a great spot for a rest. Keep your binoculars ready! The gorge is one of the best birding spots of the park. Look for the Ruwenzori turaco, duikers, and golden monkeys.

Mukozi Village lake trip for 45 USD by motorboat and 25 USD by canoe

After Kyangushu Island with an ancestral burial place, you will anchor near the picturesque village of Mukozi. You will be warmly welcomed by the children of the nursery school, pay a visit to a craft maker and a traditional healer, and finally stop for a sip of something outrageous in the local bar.

Mukozi Village road trip for 20 USD

The same program as the Mukozi Village Lake Trip, without the boat ride.

Lake Mulehe trip for 30 USD by motorboat and 20 USD by canoe

The boat takes you to Kyangushu Island where in former days the ancestors were buried. Back on the mainland the children of the nursery school will give a short performance. After the school visit, an experienced local fisherman will explain his ways of catching fish. Your local lunch will be served in the village, where you will also see a craft maker at work. The trip will end with a visit to a traditional healer.

Mutanda Island trip for 50 USD by motorboat and 20 USD by canoe
