If Marangu is the “Coca-Cola” route, then the Machame Route is the “whiskey” route of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the second most popular and one of the most scenic routes on the mountain. With this package, all climbers will get to the summit within 6 days. The acclimatization is easier with the Machame Route and the success rate is fairly high. This package is suitable for physically fit people with some hiking experience. Bask in the picturesque landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro!
Airport transfer included: Kilimanjaro International Airport
You will be accommodated for 5 nights at several campsites in Mount Kilimanjaro including Machame Camp, Shira Camp, Barranco Camp, Barafu Camp, and Mweka Camp. This package also includes 2 nights' stay at a hotel before and after the program.
You will drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate for about 45 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.
You will depart the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. You will continue hiking for a short distance until you reach the Machame Camp.
After breakfast, you will leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route now turns west onto a river gorge until you arrive at the Shira Camp.
From the Shira Plateau, you will keep on hiking to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As you hike, you will change your way to the southeast toward the Lava Tower, called the "shark's tooth" (elevation range around 4,650 meters / 15,250 feet).
Shortly after the tower, you will come to the second junction which goes to the Arrow Glacier. You will now continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day at around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for the summit day.
After breakfast, you will leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up to the Barranco Wall (elevation 4250 meters / 13,900 feet), through the Karanga Valley (elevation 4050 meters / 13,250 feet) to the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail.
You will keep on hiking up to the Barafu Camp. At this point, you have accomplished the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here, you will build your camp with views of the summit in the distance.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 02:00), you will continue your way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You will head to the northwesterly direction and ascend through a heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim.
This will be the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once you arrive at Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.
From the summit, you will then begin your descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp and stopping at Barafu for lunch en route. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. You will arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy your last evening on the mountain.
After breakfast, you will continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will be helpful.
From the gate, you will continue walking for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka Village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes). Don’t forget to tip your guides and porters.
Your trekking will take place on Mount Kilimanjaro located in Tanzania.
You will be served daily meals which include breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. This is a full board safari. All meals and drinking water are included in the price.
