You will be accommodated for 5 nights at several campsites in Mount Kilimanjaro including Machame Camp, Shira Camp, Barranco Camp, Barafu Camp, and Mweka Camp. This package also includes 2 nights' stay at a hotel before and after the program.

Day 1

You will drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate for about 45 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.

You will depart the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. You will continue hiking for a short distance until you reach the Machame Camp.

  • Elevation: 1,830 meters / 6,000 feet to 3,050 meters / 9,950 feet
  • Distance: 11 kilometers / 7 miles
  • Hiking time: 5 - 6 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

Day 2

After breakfast, you will leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route now turns west onto a river gorge until you arrive at the Shira Camp.

  • Elevation: 3,050 meters / 9,950 feet to 3,850 meters / 12,600 feet
  • Distance: 5 kilometers / 3 miles
  • Walking time: 4 - 5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Day 3

From the Shira Plateau, you will keep on hiking to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As you hike, you will change your way to the southeast toward the Lava Tower, called the "shark's tooth" (elevation range around 4,650 meters / 15,250 feet).

Shortly after the tower, you will come to the second junction which goes to the Arrow Glacier. You will now continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day at around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for the summit day.

  • Elevation: 3,850 meters / 12,600 feet to 4,000 meters / 13,000 feet
  • Distance: 10 kilometers / 6 miles
  • Walking time: 5 - 6 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-desert

Day 4

After breakfast, you will leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up to the Barranco Wall (elevation 4250 meters / 13,900 feet), through the Karanga Valley (elevation 4050 meters / 13,250 feet) to the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail.

You will keep on hiking up to the Barafu Camp. At this point, you have accomplished the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here, you will build your camp with views of the summit in the distance.

  • Elevation: 4,000 meters / 13,000 feet to 4,700 meters / 15,350 feet
  • Distance: 9 kilometers / 6 miles
  • Hiking time: 6 - 8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 5

Very early in the morning (midnight to 02:00), you will continue your way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You will head to the northwesterly direction and ascend through a heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim.

This will be the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.

From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once you arrive at Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

From the summit, you will then begin your descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp and stopping at Barafu for lunch en route. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. You will arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy your last evening on the mountain.

  • Elevation: 4,700 meters / 15,350 feet to 5,895 meters / 19,340 feet
  • Down to: 3,090 meters / 10,150 feet
  • Distance: 5 kilometers / 3 miles up / 13 kilometers / 8 miles down
  • Hiking time: 5 - 7 hours up / 5 - 6 hours down
  • Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

Day 6

After breakfast, you will continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will be helpful.

From the gate, you will continue walking for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka Village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes). Don’t forget to tip your guides and porters.

  • Elevation: 3,090 meters / 10,150 feet to 1,680 meters / 5,500 feet
  • Distance: 10 kilometers / 6 miles
  • Walking time: 3 - 4 hours

"The communication was very nice and easy, I received quick and clear answers to all my questions before, during, and after the trip! I did 2 days safari in Tarangire and Ngorongoro. The first day was perfect: good guide, good food, perfect organization, wonderful park, etc. The second was a bit harder. The only problem I really found was the mismatch between the other people in the group having plenty of time and wanting to enjoy their safari, and me having to take my flight. Except this, everything was fine, nice, and well organized."

"Overall, it was a great experience with Foot Slopes Tours & Safaris. They answered all my questions before the start of safari promptly and provided the service just as promised. Of all the research I did, I found Foot Slopes offered the best package for the time I had. Our driver, Juma, was amazing. He had great knowledge of all the animal and plant species. I went to Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. Maybe all the safari operators can think of ways to improve food as some people had stomach issues, but Foot Slopes was great in taking care of people who had any health issues. I totally recommend them. "

"Although I was unable to travel with Foot Slope Tours & Safaris due to a medical issue, the gentlemen in the office, Goodluck and (I've forgotten the other man's name) were amazing. They were helpful, kind, patient, and went so far above and beyond. It was amazing. They spent hours with me, bringing me to the hospital, helping arrange flights home, transporting and supporting me at a very difficult time. I cannot speak highly enough of how much I appreciated their help. They even contacted me after I returned home with kind words and thoughts. I really hope to return, and bring friends to complete this travel experience. I'd give them more stars if it was allowed. Thank you again from New Hampshire! "

"The tour was amazing and we got to see so many amazing animals. We camped in the Serengeti which was fabulous as well as Ngorongoro in which we had a stunning view over the crater from the campsite. The people working for Foot Slopes Tours & Safaris are very nice! They may seem unorganised at times and maybe not as professional as our Western standards. Everything was perfect for me and I would recommend it! Remember that although it is expensive, these packages are amongst the cheapest so don't be too fussy."

"Every step of the travel arrangement process with Foot Slopes Tours & Safaris was very smooth and efficient. I would especially emphasize the effort that Gabriel and the rest of the team made for us to enjoy the safari. We were also very satisfied with the accommodation, both the tents in the safari camp in Mto Wa Mbu and a hotel in Arusha. Everything essential was provided, meals were served as agreed, so we really had an opportunity to rest and relax properly in both locations. Our guide was professional and trustworthy and made our game drives even more interesting by providing additional information about the wildlife in the region. He was also very open to making some plan adjustments according to our needs. Overall, we had an unforgettable experience of the safari in Tanzania, and I can fully recommend Foot Slopes Tours & Safaris for their friendly and personal approach in organizing our wildlife adventure. They really went out of their way to help us enjoy our tour."

"We all really enjoyed this safari. A few of us had not been on safari before and a couple had but we were all well impressed with the organisation of the company, the greeting on our arrival and the helpfulness and knowledge of the guide. He could not do enough for us and made an effort to go above and beyond what you'd expect. The tents we were expecting turned out to be amazing. Glamping beyond anything I could have dreamed of. Perfect. The only minor glitch was the tourist hotel on the night prior. The staff there didn't seem to realise they were in a service industry but this was more amusing than a problem."

"The safari game driving I had in Ngorongoro and Serengeti was amazing! Thank you Foot Slopes Tours & Safaris. Actually, we missed our flight on the last day because of several car problems during safari driving, but our consultant Gabriel and Foot Slopes team took care of us everything. They provided us free meals, accommodation in Arusha, all the taxi drives, and new flight tickets. Things happen in safari, lots of unexpected things. I think the best safari tour company is who takes care of their clients until the end no matter what happens - which I think is Foot Slopes team. Their service is excellent!"

"This safari tour was perfect. All begin with an online discussion on the web page, where I can gain all information I need before spending the money. Then, I was picked up from the airport by the owner (included) and taken to the hotel in the middle of the Arusha where I slept the night before and after the safari tour (both nights were included). In the morning, the guide took me directly from the hotel. We have made 3 days safari with Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara. The guide in the jeep is communicative and educated to answer all questions. We had the budget version with accommodation in the camp between the parks (with swimming pool), which was very nice and we liked the "family" dinner with other safari guests. I would definitely recommend this company because of the very reasonable price and the personal approach of all the staff, who really try to make me enjoy the safari. "
