Saadani is geographically the closest reserve to Dar es Salaam (130 kilometers), offering an irresistible combination of beach and wildlife viewing. Saadani also sits almost directly opposite Zanzibar’s Stone Town, located approximately 42 kilometers away. Flights from Zanzibar to Saadani take just 15 minutes.
The east coast of Africa has a long and rich cultural history and Saadani has always been at the center. It was first mentioned in writings by Indian traders in the sixth century AD and has been an important trading area for much of the last millennium.
Saadani is dominated by acacia woodland and coastal thickets. It also protects a large area of mangrove swamps along the coastline north from the Wami River, and includes several species of palm including the mysterious looking 'walking palm', which is not actually a palm at all!
Dolphins are sometimes seen offshore and whales pass through the Zanzibar channel on their migration. Of particular interest is the green turtle project at Madete Marine Reserve. This endangered species is under particular threat from fishing practices offshore from Saadani and a conservation project has been established to help protect both turtles and their eggs.
This relatively small (3230 square kilometers) national park lies 300 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam and is the closest park to the capital. It is nestled between the Uruguru Mountains to the east and the Rift Valley escarpments to the southwest. As it is close to the Selous ecosystem and therefore part of it, it benefits from the highest game density of the entire conservation area, while it is easily to access.
Although less spectacular regarding flora and fauna, the Mikumi National Park obtains a good impression of the African animal world and is suitable for a short visit. There is a rich variety bird species as well as large numbers of giraffes, buffaloes, and elephants and close to the water holes are also lions, leopards, and hippos. Furthermore you can see zebras, lions, wild dogs, pythons, hartebeest, wildebeest, elephants, impala, warthog, eland, and antelope.
This national park has a total area of 2,000 square kilometers. It contains the greatest altitudinal range of forests in East Africa - the eastern escarpment - the only place in East Africa with unbroken forest cover from lowland forest communities at below 250 meters above sea level, through intermediate types, to mountain communities at over 2,800 meters.
Because of such a wide range in altitude and habitat types, Udzungwa National Park has one of the highest numbers of species endemic worldwide. Udzungwa National Park is located 65 kilometers south of Mikumi National Park.
Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. On its main island, Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar, is Stone Town, a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences. Its winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace. The northern villages Nungwi and Kendwa have wide beaches lined with hotels.
You will be provided with daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner during this safari.
Please book your flight to arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Faustin Tour and Travel will pick you up from the airport.
