This trip is the ideal introduction to under canvas safaris in Botswana. From the game rich waterways of the Okavango Delta to the semi arid desert of the Makgadikgadi, you will be blown away by the camps, wildlife, and scenery. This trip is an all-rounder, it works at any time of year and is good for couples, families, or honeymoons. It’s the perfect introduction to Botswana showcasing its diverse wildlife and habitats.
Six traditional safari tents in the mists of the Delta. The Duba Explorers Camp is situated in the wet area of the Okavango Delta reserve close to the sister camp Duba Plains Camp. Nestled amongst a wooded area, the camp has beautiful views across the lagoon. Guests will arrive at camp by landing at the nearby airstrip (a seven-minute drive away) and then be transferred to camp by a representative. The camp is made accessible by bridges over the surrounding waters.
The six traditional but luxuriously styled tents are built on a wooded island overlooking the lagoon, each tent is designed with a private veranda and en-suite facilities containing a flushing toilet, double vanities, and indoor shower. The main area has an open dining concept which provides a beautiful backdrop for dinner.
The Duba Explorers Camp prides itself on the diverse wildlife and regular sightings. The camp's concession has over 74,000 acres of woodlands, floodplains, and islands which provide homes to an abundance of wildlife making for very exciting game viewing. Not only does this camp offer the usual game drives, but due to the location of the camp they can provide boat safaris (weather permitted), along with walking safaris.
Gomoti is a small luxury bush camp of only 10 expansive suites. These are really well spaced ensuring maximum privacy. They have both an indoor and an outdoor shower – quite a necessity when you want to cool down after a few hours in the unforgiving African sun. All suites overlook one of the many waterways, or channels as they are known, with lovely raised decks from which you can survey plenty of activity. The main camp area has a stunning open-plan lounge and dining area with a deck that stretches its entire length. It is from here in the morning that you leave to go out on your Mokoro boat trip. In the evening it is on this deck that you sit around the fire enjoying a post Safari G & T before dining communally under the stars.
Gomoti is located on its own private concession which means that you only see Gomoti vehicles out on game drives and that there will only be a maximum of 5 vehicles out at any one time. The game is prolific and offers some incredible sightings such as a herd of around 800 buffalo and plentiful elephants, giraffes, and plains game.
Gomoti also offers you the chance to explore the Okavango Delta by boat – either a boat Safari or by Mokoro, the traditional boats that navigate the waterways. Here you encounter pods of hippos, crocodiles basking in the sun, and plentiful bird life. By Mokoro you can admire the water lilies up close, slowly opening in the warmth of the sunshine, the tiny frogs balanced on the reeds, and the intricately woven webs.
Jack’s Camp is a traditional East African 1940's 1940s-style safari camp, situated on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pan, a once great inland sea, and now a bed of desert salt pans the size of Switzerland. A unique camp in a private area of Great Kalahari with exotic Bedouin furnishings and rare African art. For several decades, Jack's Camp has set the standard for style and desert experiences in the Kalahari. The dry season is from mid-April through the end of October. Green Season is from November through mid-April.
Jack's Camp is a classic desert safari camp with seven double and three twin tents, all with en-suite bathrooms featuring indoor and outdoor showers. The camp is spacious and stylish, with a sophisticated 1940s safari atmosphere. Persian rugs and cool cotton sheets form a striking contrast with the rugged wilderness viewed from the comfort of one’s own veranda. The tents are very comfortable and in keeping with the character of the Makgadikgadi. From May 2020 the tents will retain the same iconic, 1940s style but with the addition of new textiles from India, Natural History cabinets, wood-burning morso stoves, and an overhead bed cooling system.
Activities are conducted on horseback or in open 4-wheel drive vehicles custom-designed for this terrain and accompanied by knowledgeable guides. Only in the dry winter months are all-purpose ATV vehicles (Quad bikes) available, allowing guests to travel across the salt pans. Walks with a Bushman tracker and a visit to Chapman's Baobab, the historical baobab tree used by Livingstone, Selous, and other early explorers are also activities on offer. The swimming pool pavilion will be made bigger with the addition of a sun deck and a dedicated spa tent will be added. Children of all ages are welcome and there is no Wifi in camp. For those wanting to spend a little longer in paradise, a spa treatment and horse ride are included in stays of 3 nights or more.
This itinerary starts off with 3 days in the Northern Okavango Delta, an area famed for its lion and buffalo interactions. The 3 nights at Duba Explorers is the perfect way to immerse yourself into the bush with the comfort of a 5 star camp and incredible guiding. Following your 3 nights here you will start your journey south to Gomoti Plains to spend another 3 nights in an area well known for its high predator numbers but also the opportunity for rhino sightings, which these days are hard to come by.
Gomoti Plains is known for its relaxed atmosphere which makes you feel like you are at home and the staff begin to feel like part of your family. Your final stop looks deserted on the surface but is indeed full of life and it will blow you away. The 3 nights at Jacks Camp will contrast the wet Okavango Delta perfectly and leave you wanting to come back and explore more of what Botswana has to offer.
Arrive in Maun in the early afternoon. You will be met off the plane and escorted through to domestic departures where you will catch your light aircraft flight to Duba Explorers in the North of the Okavango Delta. On arrival, you will have time to have lunch, settle in, and get ready for your first afternoon game drive.
After a quick coffee and maybe a light breakfast head out for your morning game drive and explore the endless wilderness. Duba Explorers is known for its incredible game viewing and today being your first full day in the bush hopefully you will see plenty. Spend the heat of the day relaxing, reading, and having a long lunch before you head out for your afternoon game drive.
Having got a taste of what the Okavango has to offer yesterday afternoon, today is the chance for you to really experience what this incredible area has to offer. As well as traditional game drives this camp is a great base to explore some of the waterways by boat or traditional mokoro, you can also take the opportunity to stretch your legs and go on a guided walk which is a great way to spot wildlife.
This morning you will enjoy a final safari activity from the camp and breakfast before being transferred back to the airstrip for you flight to the southern regions of the Okavango Delta. During your 25-minute flight take in the scenery from the air before arriving at the airstrip. You will be met by your guide and taken to Gomoti Plains camp to settle in for the next few nights and prepare for your afternoon activity.
As well as boasting access to amazing game viewing areas, Gomoti Plains is one of my favourite camps for just relaxing by the pool and watching the numerous elephants walk past. The tented suites are very spacious and luxurious with their own private decks, whilst the swimming pool is perfectly located looking over the meandering river in front of the lodge.
Like Duba Explorers, Gomoti offers a number of activities such as mokoro trips and bush walks. Both are a great way to get a different view of the wildlife and also spend time looking at creatures you would often drive straight past in a game drive vehicle. Chat with your guide and make a plan to squeeze in as much as possible into your final full day in the Okavango Delta.
This morning you will enjoy a final safari activity from Gomoti Plains and breakfast before being transferred back to the airstrip for a flight to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Jack’s Camp is your final stop for 3 nights and in our opinion, we have saved the best for last. You will arrive in good time to have lunch, settle in, and go on one of the many activities this area has to offer.
Game drives are the ideal way to explore the vast open expanses of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. This allows you to cover lots of ground increasing your chances of seeing the most game. Although the wildlife is more sparse down here, the diversity is staggering and in the early mornings, you will have a good chance of seeing Kalahari black-maned lion, brown hyena, aardwolf, ostrich, zebra, wildebeest, and numerous other desert-adapted species.
For your final full day, it's time to get up close and personal with one of the habituated meerkat families who find their home not too far from camp. These meerkats are fully wild, however, over a long period they have been habituated so they are fully relaxed in human presence which means you can follow them whilst they hunt and interact with each other.
After a morning relaxing at camp and maybe a morning game drive if time allows you will be collected and taken to the airstrip for your small plane flight to Maun airport, and from there to your onward destination!
The Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland delta and houses a diverse range of wildlife in its many ecosystems.
The Okavango Delta is one of those places that make you realise just how incredible the world is, and anyone who ventures here will enjoy a truly unique safari holiday with thriving wildlife to discover and unusual landscapes to explore. Created by a plate tectonic shift, this vast inland delta is one of the largest on earth, creating a wetland oasis in the otherwise inhospitable Kalahari basin. It's a great place for a family safari or a honeymoon.
Where land and delta meet, a mosaic of water channels, grasslands, forests, and lagoons provide an extremely rich and diverse habitat for a multitude of animals, including the elusive sitatunga antelope, as well as large numbers of hippo, crocodile, elephant, and buffalo. Predators are particularly well represented, with healthy populations of lion, cheetah, and leopard, as well as the endangered wild dog. It’s a birders paradise too.
The north-eastern region of the Kalahari Basin contains the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans. A tailor-made Makgadikgadi safari is all about visiting the largest salt pans in the world, which cover an area almost the size of Portugal. An area of wide-open uninhabited spaces and endless horizons, the remoteness and inaccessibility of this desert environment give it a magnetic allure. Yet Makgadikgadi is not always dry. In the wet season (December to April), the rains transform the pans into a huge sheet of water. These attract clouds of flamingos and water-birds, as well as triggering dramatic migrations of wildebeest and zebra of up to ten thousand strong, second only in size to the migration in the Serengeti.
As well as being a haven for wildlife, a luxury Botswana safari in Makgadikgadi offers an opportunity to walk with bushmen trackers, venture into the impenetrable pans on quad bikes, and explore remote archaeological sites.
All meals and drinks are included apart from premium alcoholic beverages.
