Catch a 40-minute flight to Sandakan before boarding a boat (1 hour and 15 minutes) to Selingan Island. Located 40 kilometers north of Sandakan, the island is one of the most important turtle breeding areas in South East Asia.

A safe haven for endangered Green and Hawsbill turtles, this marine park is visited almost every night by turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs at night. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon swimming or strolling around the island.

In the evening, after dinner, visit the exhibition center while waiting for the park ranger to locate turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. Witness the collecting of eggs from the nesting site, planting them in the hatchery and see little turtle scrambling to the open sea upon the release on the sea.

Overnight at Selingan Island Resthouse. Today, the meal plan includes lunch and dinner.

Day 2: Sepilok Orangutan - Sandakan - Kota Kinabalu

At 7 a.m., depart the island of Sandakan to visit Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, one of the world’s largest orangutan sanctuaries. Known scientifically as Pongo pymaeus, this ape shares up to 96.4% of the human genetic make-up and is gentle, shy, and curious by nature.

Take a short walk through the lowland dipterocarp forest to the observation platform to watch the orangutans emerge from the forest to be fed by the rangers. After which, drop off at your hotel or transfer to the airport for your onward flight to Kota Kinabalu / Kuala Lumpur. The flight departure time must be after 14:30.

  • Sea condition may be rough during the monsoon season between December and February.
  • Sabah Park only permits still / digital camera of unaided flash to photograph the turtles at night.
  • Sabah Park forbids visitors from roaming around the beach at Selingan Island between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless accompanied by a park ranger.
  • Flight ETA must be before 08:30 in order to catch the scheduled boat departure from Sandakan to Selingan Turtle Island.

On this tour, you will visit Selingan Island to see turtles and Sandakan to see orangutans.

Selingan island is one of the three islands of the Turtle Island Park, which lies 40 kilometres north of Sandakan and is a safe haven for the endangered green and hawksbill turtle. It houses the park’s headquarters, a turtle hatchery, tourist accommodation and basic facilities. These areas are protected for conservation and preservation of turtles and other marine animals.

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation centre is located approximately 25 kilometres north of Sandakan, covering 40 square metres of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve where orphaned and injured orangutans are welcome for rehabilitation before returning them back to the forest.
