On this safari, you will explore Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park.
Situated in northern Tanzania, Serengeti National Park is a special place famous for its large area of grassy plains. It’s next to Kenya and not far from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. People love to visit because they can see lots of different animals and beautiful scenery.
Serengeti National Park is famous for its animals, especially gnu (wildebeests), gazelles, and zebras. You can see these animals in huge numbers, which is not common anywhere else in Africa. The park is known for the amazing migration of these animals, which is when they move from one place to another in search of food.
The park is so special that it’s been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This means it’s important for the whole world to protect and take care of. Serengeti National Park is like a treasure for nature lovers.
The park was started in 1951 to help protect the animals and the land. It covers a big area—about 5,700 square miles—and has different types of landscapes, like grassy plains and woodlands. This diversity helps many animals live here.
Every year, animals in Serengeti National Park travel from one place to another. During the wet season, from November to May, they stay in the southeastern part of the park. But when it gets dry, usually in late May or June, they move west and north in search of water and food. This movement is called migration, and it’s a big event in the park.
In Serengeti National Park, you can find almost 1,300,000 gnu, 60,000 zebras, 150,000 gazelles, and many other animals. It’s like a big family of animals living together. From big lions to small birds, there’s something interesting to see for everyone.
Ngorongoro Crater is unique even amongst Tanzania’s incredible array of wild spaces. This enormous caldera is all that remains of an extinct volcano, dating back approximately two million years and comprising no fewer than 260 square kilometers of jaw-dropping wilderness. The walls of Ngorongoro Crater rise higher than 600 meters, enclosing a surprising variety of landscapes where many of East Africa’s most notable wildlife species roam free. You’ll find a rolling savanna where the rare black rhinoceros can still be found beside great herds of plains game, green swamps where hippos dwell, and lakeside forests where countless birds and monkeys weave their way through the canopy.
The secret to Ngorongoro’s diversity of habitats lies in its elevation. The crater floor sits at approximately 1,700 meters above sea level, allowing for wide swathes of open grassland to flourish. In comparison, the heavily forested crater rim rises to about 2,300 meters in elevation. The best lodges in the region are tucked amongst the trees here along the crater’s rim, and visitors on safari can enjoy daily excursions into the heart of Ngorongoro on thrilling game drives that last all day long.
Nestled slightly off the beaten safari path, Tarangire National Park emerges as a tranquil haven amidst the bustling wildlife destinations of Northern Tanzania. Its serene ambiance, coupled with an authentic safari experience, makes it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts seeking to immerse themselves in the untouched beauty of the region.
Tarangire’s claim to fame lies in its spectacular elephant migration, an awe-inspiring phenomenon that draws visitors from far and wide. With a sprawling game viewing area ten times larger than nearby Manyara NP, Tarangire offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, as they roam freely across the vast savannah.
While often overshadowed by its renowned neighbors, Tarangire surprises visitors with its abundance of wildlife, particularly during the peak months from July to October. Here, amidst the swaying grasslands and acacia-dotted plains, travelers can encounter not only the iconic elephants but also a diverse array of species, from graceful giraffes and elusive leopards to the striking oryx and regal cheetahs. Moreover, the park’s unique ecosystem supports an impressive bird population, making it a haven for avid birdwatchers eager to spot rare and endemic species in their natural habitat.
