During this safari, you will spend most of your nights at some campsites. The rest will be spent in a cabin. At the camp, you will use sleeping bags, so linen will not be provided.
You will depart from Cassia Lodge near Entebbe at 08:00. You will make your way through the outskirts of the vibrant capital city, Kampala, before starting your journey west. On your route, you will visit the drum market and a fruit market, and then stop at the Equator. In the afternoon, you will enter the Lake Mburo National Park, known for its plains game and large hippo population. After that, you will camp the night on the lake shore.
You will start the day with a game drive / walk and then exit the park to travel through a landscape of rolling hill which is littered with banana plantations and herds of impressive Ankole longhorn cattle. In the afternoon, you will travel on rough mountain roads, passing remote villages, often shrouded in mist, toward the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Your camp for the night will be at the edge of the forest.
On one of these days, you will partake in what is undoubtedly the highlight of the tour, gorilla trekking. You will split up into small groups and with local guides, trek up into the forest to locate and spend time with a family of these few remaining wild mountain gorillas. As the gorilla permits are limited, there will be two days to be allowed for all of the group to partake. Should all permits be available on day 4, you would visit Lake Bunyonyi on day 3. Whilst not gorilla trekking, you will enjoy village walks and spend time searching for the magnificent birds inhabiting the fringe of the forest.
Leaving the mountains and forests behind you, you will drop down to the grasslands of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here, you will spend two nights camping at a remote camp. Besides abundant mammal, reptile, and bird species, Ishasha is renowned for its huge tree climbing lions. You will game drive extensively searching the tall fig trees for lions, and the savanna for other game.
Packing up early, you will travel across the park and through the Maramagambo Forest where you might encounter wild chimpanzee and an amazing variety of birdlife. Arriving at Kyambura Gorge in the afternoon, you will hike down into the gorge with a local guide and hope to spend some time with a habituated family of wild chimpanzee. Because visitors are limited, some of your group may do this activity the following morning. At night, you will camp in the vicinity.
In the morning, you will travel through the park before continuing north to Rwenzori Mountains. After setting up your camp at a local community center, you will enjoy a lengthy walk through numerous rural villages and up into the forest to the Rwenzori lookout point. Rising some 5000 meters above sea level, the slopes of these mountains are covered in tropical forest and yet the peaks are often snow-capped, a bewildering sight considering their proximity to the equator.
An early start, you leave the mountains behind and descend into the luminous green tea plantations surrounding Fort Portal. You will cover vast distance on this day and mostly on rough roads. Your destination tonight will be the Kaniyo Pabidi camp in Murchison Falls National Park.
Your first stop today will be above the Murchison Falls, a narrow gap through which the Nile River falls 40 meters into the Rift Valley. You will spend some time here exploring the falls. Next, you will travel downstream where you will board a boat that carries your group and equipment on a game cruise down the Nile to your campsite near the junction of the Victoria and Albert Nile. You will wild camp tonight in a big game area. At times it may not be possible to travel by boat, you will then drive by road.
A leisurely morning, you will enjoy the river before returning to your vehicle. In the afternoon, you will exit the park and travel to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, established to reintroduce rhino into their original habitat in protected areas. After that, you will camp for the night.
