This safari takes place in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Murchison National Park in Ugnda.
Rhino Fund Uganda opened Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in a private 70-sq kilometers reserve, 170 kilometers northwest of Kampala, about 30 years after poachers shot the nation’s last wild rhino in Murchison in 1983. There are now 22 southern white rhinos roaming the savanna and wetland.
The long-term goal for these magnificent beasts is to reintroduce them in Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley National Parks. While tracking rhinos on foot sounds a bit foolhardy, the fact that they’re in the company of armed anti-poacher rangers 24 hours, means they’re well and truly used to human presence.
Murchison Falls National Park became one of Uganda’s first national parks in 1952, measuring 3840 square kilometers.
At Murchison Falls, the Nile squeezes through a 8-meter wide gorge and plunges with a thunderous roar into the "Devil's Cauldron", creating a trademark rainbow.
The northern section of the park contains savanna and borassus palms, acacia trees and riverine woodland. The south is dominated by woodland and forest patches
Murchison Falls National Park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment tumbles into vast, palm-dotted savanna. It is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 birds.
Murchison Falls National Park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which plunges 45 meters over the remnant rift valley wall, creating the dramatic Murchison Falls, the centerpiece of the park and the final event in an 80-kilometer stretch of rapids. The mighty cascade drains the last of the river's energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert. This stretch of river provides one of Uganda's most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Regular visitors to the riverbanks include elephants, giraffes and buffaloes; while hippos, Nile crocodiles, and aquatic birds are permanent residents.
Budongo Forest reserve is of an enormous diversity in flora and fauna with a well-developed and extensive trail system with a length of 115 kilometers in total is found throughout the forest, which enables tourist activities like forest walks. Apart from the 465 species of plants, the reserve is also famous for the age-old, Mahogany trees which can grow up to 80 meters.
While on safari, you will be provided with all daily meals based on breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the 4 nights. Water shall be provided to you throughout the safari tour experience.
Join a habituation and research team that goes out every morning to study and habituate the chimpanzees. The habituation experience offers you the unique occasion to join the professional guides on their daily program and follow the chimpanzees during their activities.
With an early start, you get to watch the chimpanzees waking up and de-nest, search for food, rest, play and start making new nests in the evening to go to sleep again. With the habituation experience you will spend an entire day with these amazing creatures and learn about their way of life.
The research staff leading the trek are very learned in forest botany, chimpanzee behavior, as well as the personalities and interactions of the individual chimpanzees. Please note that there is an option to end the habituation experience earlier than nesting time though.
This activity requires an extra night stay in the safari and comes at the additional cost of 298 USD per person.
