Discover fascinating and remote places as you let Cross Country Air Safaris introduce you to African wildlife at its best. Visit small bush lodges offering scenic excursions, superb game viewing, and stunning landscapes. Discover Okavango Delta as its best, as well as Tubu Tree and Little Vumbura, with local guides who excel at approaching animals for safe, sensitive, close-up photography of lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, zebra and other plains game, large or small.
You will be provided four nights of accommodation in this safari. On the first and second nights of the safari, you will be staying at the Tubu Tree, while on the third and fourth nights, you will stay at the Little Vumbura.
Little Vumbura is situated on a beautiful island in a private concession in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. Surrounded as it is by water and lying close to large rivers, water-based activities are just as popular as those on land, both offering spectacular and diverse wildlife sightings.
Little Vumbura is a beautiful six-roomed tented camp shaded by the canopy of an ancient forest. Each well-appointed tent has en-suite facilities and a deck with incredible vistas. A plunge pool and reading area overlook the floodplains and a star deck leads off over the water from the dining area.
Located on Hunda Island, Tubu Tree Camp is built in traditional style, with elevated wooden walkways connecting eight tents on raised platforms, each with picturesque lookouts of the surrounding floodplains from a private deck. En-suite bathroom facilities and an outdoor shower are standard, while a family unit consisting of two adjoining tents and separate bathrooms share a lounge.
The main dining and lounge areas and pool are raised to maximize the vistas, and an open bar area is shaded by a large marula tree.
Hunda Island is known for its concentrations of game and offers both spectacular wildlife viewing on land, and tranquil adventures on the water. This combination of activities makes Tubu a complete Delta adventure.
After you arrive in Maun, you will be greeted by a representative of Tubu Tree, and you will be guided to your flight into the Delta. The Okavango Delta is a unique pulsing wetland. More correctly an alluvial fan, the delta covers about 15,000 square kilometers of Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana and owes its existence to the Okavango (Kavango) River which flows from the Angolan highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and into the harsh Kalahari Desert.
Upon arrival at the camp, management will welcome you, introduce the camp and its surroundings, discuss the program, answer your questions, and in general, ensure your comfort. After high tea at about 03:30 p.m, the first afternoon game drive will commence. You return to the camp well after sunset to a delicious dinner and drinks around the campfire.
Activities include day and night game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles, mokoro (canoe) excursions, and motor boat cruises (seasonal). A variety of habitats ensures diverse and interesting wildlife viewing. Species that can be seen include elephant, lion, zebra, red lechwe, giraffe, tsessebe, and wildebeest, as well as kudu, impala, leopard, and bushbuck.
Expect a very early wake-up call because game viewing is often at its best this time of the day. A light breakfast awaits you, then it’s time to collect binoculars and camera for the early morning game drive. You will then return for a hearty brunch, have siesta, and proceed to the afternoon’s excursion.
After morning game drive and brunch, you will depart for the short flight to Little Vumbura. Upon arrival at the camp, management will welcome you, introduce the camp and its surroundings, discuss the program, answer your questions, and in general, ensure your comfort.
After high tea at about 03:30 p.m, the first afternoon game drive will commence. You will return to the camp well after sunset to a delicious dinner and drinks around the campfire. Since your previous lodge was a land camps with emphasis on driving, you may want to concentrate on water activities here.
You have all day to enjoy both water and landscapes. The shallow waterways and floodplains are ideal for mokoro outings. A motorboat cruise through papyrus-lined channels to the nearby deeper waters of the Monachira stream gives you an excellent idea of how the Delta came about and how it revitalizes itself every year.
A game drive may yield sightings not yet experienced, and a walk bring understanding for the smaller creatures and plant life. You can choose from game drives in open vehicles, by motorboat or canoe, or take a stroll under the watchful eyes of an armed ranger.
After morning game drive and brunch, you will depart for the short flight to Maun in time to connect with your next flight.
The safari includes mokoro excursions and motorboat cruises.
This safari will be held in Okavango Delta, Botswana
Botswana is a landlocked country surrounded by Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with a population of just over two million people. Slightly larger than France, the landmass covers 581,730 square kilometers, most of which is desert.
The northern regions however, form a striking contrast with the dry Kalahari, where the stunning wetlands of the world-famous Okavango Delta and the diverse habitats of the Chobe and Linyanti add to the wealth of this wonderfully diverse country. The capital city is Gaborone while Maun and Kasane are the safari hubs.
The Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most famous destinations. There are several private reserves in the delta, as well as Moremi Game Reserve. It offers a true wilderness experience, excellent wildlife viewing, and stunning scenery. Walking safaris and mokoro (dugout canoe) trips are a great addition to the usual game drives.
Most of the lodges in the delta are reached by charter plane and offer a very exclusive, high-end service. The quality of the guiding tends to be superb. The delta is a vast area and wildlife viewing is dependent on your location.
Moremi Game Reserve is the most productive and four of the Big Five are easily seen. Rhino are present in Moremi, but not seen that often. Elephant and hippo are abundant throughout the delta and wild dogs are quite common. The water-loving red lechwe and waterbuck are easy to see from a mokoro.
The Okavango is the world’s largest intact delta. It is fed by the river with the same name during the driest months. The fan-shaped delta is a mosaic of papyrus-fringed channels connecting open areas filled with water lilies. Islands in between carry borassus palms and thickets of acacia and mopane woodland.
Little Vumbura is a glorious little tented camp nestled in an ancient Okavango Delta forest, not far from its sister (and larger) camp, the Vumbura Plains Camp. As it is situated north of Mombo in a private reserve, and borders the Moremi Game Reserve, it offers an array of activities on either land or water.
This area can only be accessed by aircraft, and if the water levels are high in winter, a mokoro or boat will transfer guests to the camp. Little Vumbura and Vumbura Plains are part of a community participation project that brings the benefits of eco-tourism to the communities that live in around the Okavango Delta, thereby bringing them to the fore of mainstream tourism.
You will be served daily meals throughout the safari.
