This day, you will be picked up from the airport or your accommodation in Nairobi by Camptrek Safaris' company representative. After a brief introductory session, you will be handed over to your driver-guide to begin your safari towards Amboseli National Park. You will arrive at the lodge in time for lunch.
After lunch, you can enjoy the camp's facilities and activities before embarking on your first afternoon game drive, returning to your lodge or hotel at sunset.
Amboseli National Park is renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 meters. The park is also an elephant paradise, where large populations of African savanna elephants roam from swamp to swamp, grazing throughout the day.
The observation hill provides stunning views of the mountain peak and the park’s plains and swamps. The varied wildlife in the park includes giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, wildebeest, buffalo, and many more.
You'll leave the camp after breakfast, carrying your packed lunch boxes to be enjoyed in the wild under a lone flat-top acacia tree. You'll spend the whole day exploring the marshlands and swamps of Amboseli.
Fed by subterranean water channels, water is abundant throughout the year and so is the pasture. Elephants and various other herbivores are found there. You will retreat to the lodge late in the evening.
You also have an option of starting the day with an early morning game drive to search for animals when they're at their most active. Then, you'll return to the lodge for a relaxed breakfast and lunch.
You'll spend the hottest part of the day relaxing in camp, reading your favorite book, writing in your journal about the safari, or just listening to your favorite music while observing the birds - don't stress. Then, you'll head off again in the afternoon at 16:00 for another drive through the park. You'll return to the lodge for dinner and another night under the Amboseli stars.
After enjoying an early breakfast, you will depart from Amboseli National Park and drive towards Nairobi. Along the way, there will be a stop at the renowned Carnivore Restaurant or Tamarind for lunch.
Next, you will visit the spectacular Great Rift Valley viewpoint, where you can stretch your legs and capture photos of the contrasting landscapes, including Mount Longonot and Mount Suswa. Following this, you will continue on to the Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort (or a similar venue).
In the afternoon, you will have the option to take a boat ride, offering a refreshing experience as you explore the diverse birdlife and wildlife around the lake. Alternatively, you can choose to relax by the poolside in preparation for a busy day filled with outdoor activities the following day.
Please note that the activities mentioned above are not included in the price and are optional. Payment for these activities should be made directly to the suppliers.
Get ready for a day filled with outdoor activities! After breakfast, pack your belongings and head to a nearby animal sanctuary for a walking safari. Alternatively, you can visit Crescent Island, where the animals are less wary of humans, allowing you to take pictures up close.
After exploring the sanctuary, drive to Hell's Gate National Park (optional). You can choose to cycle, walk, or drive through the park, as it is one of the few national parks that permit these activities.
Following this adventure, enjoy lunch before setting off for Lake Nakuru. You will arrive in the late afternoon and have a game drive on your way to your lodge, which is located within the park.
After having breakfast, you will begin your first early morning game drive. Despite the early start, morning game drives are incredibly rewarding, as you can spot animals when they are most active. Lake Nakuru is home to flamingos, black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, and the endangered Rothschild's giraffe.
The southern end of the lake is the best place to observe wildlife. Following the game drive, you will exit the park and return to the lodge for lunch (you can choose to carry picnic lunch boxes if you prefer to). After lunch, you will drive through the Rift Valley floor to the Masai Mara National Reserve.
Upon your arrival, you will be welcomed by Maasai warriors who will escort you on a cultural walking safari, including a visit to a Maasai village to learn more about the community that has coexisted with the Mara wildlife for centuries. You will return later in the day.
This will be a full day spent game viewing across the rich tree-studded grassland and rolling hills of the famous savannah. The Mara is renowned for its great herds of plains game animals like leopards, cheetahs, lions, and other herbivores. It also has every other type of wildlife to be found in Kenya. You will have a full-day game drive in Masai Mara National Reserve.
Your lunch on this day will be picnic lunch boxes in the savannah under a flat-top acacia tree while watching the animals grazing. You'll continue with the game viewing en route to your camp and arrive late in the afternoon after thoroughly exploring this massive grassland savannah measuring 1,500 sqm.
You will have an option of booking a balloon ride on this day, which takes off early in the morning. After landing, the crew will help you out of the basket and escort you to a lovely setting for a bush breakfast, which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is worth the price. Later, join your driver guide at a location and proceed with your full-day game drive.
After a leisurely breakfast, you will check out of your lodge, pack your belongings, and drive back to Nairobi. Along the way, you may choose to visit the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi where you can get up close to the gentle and endangered Rothschild's giraffes. There, you will have the opportunity to feed them and learn more about these magnificent creatures.
After your visit, you will proceed to your respective hotel or the airport, marking the end of your safari adventure. Depending on your homeward flight departure time, you will coordinate your departure from Masai Mara with your driver-guide.
Regardless of whether this is your first time on safari or you’re a safari veteran, Kenya is a fantastic place to go looking for wildlife.
The Masai Mara National Reserve and surrounding conservancies get all the attention for big cat sightings and the annual wildebeest migration. But, Kenya has numerous world-class parks to explore, and it's also an excellent place to relax on a beach holiday once your safari is over.
Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s safari icons, a world of big-tusked elephants and big cats (lions and sometimes cheetahs), all set against the backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. It’s a beautiful, compact park with lots of wildlife, including flamingos and an easy-to-find hyena den.
And, there’s real safari magic in the air in the early morning or late afternoon, when the clouds often part to reveal Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Amboseli offers great wildlife viewing, and four of the Big Five are present. Rhinos are absent, and leopards are very rarely seen, but big herds of elephants reliably move to and from the marshy swamps in the center of the park. Buffalo, wildebeest, plains zebra, and gazelle are all very common. Lions are the easiest to spot of the big cats, but cheetahs are also possible.
At its best, Amboseli is magnificent, and it’s the beautiful mix of landscapes and habitats that enables the park to shelter such amazing wildlife. The place inhabits a vast basin with deep-green swamps in the heart of the park, stands of acacia forest in the east, and expansive savannah grasslands stretching all the way to distant hills and mountains.
Mt. Kilimanjaro (actually in Tanzania) towers gloriously over the park to the south.
The two drier periods of the year, from January to February (between the area’s short and long patches of rainfall) and June to October (in the dry season proper), are the best times to visit. Your game drive won’t be ruined by rain, and the animals can’t hide in the thin vegetation.
The park does get very busy at these times, however. The best time for birding is from December to March.
Scenic Lake Nakuru National Park is Kenya’s most popular national park and with good reason. It’s a fantastic place to see rhinos, and sightings of lions and leopards are possible. It’s also easy to reach: the entrance is very close to the city of Nakuru.
The park is centered on a large, shallow lake that supports great birdlife, including pelicans and flamingos. However, it has experienced dramatically fluctuating water levels in recent years. This can affect everything - from flamingo populations to trail access.
Lake Nakuru offers easy wildlife viewing of most big safari animals, with the exception of elephants. Black and white rhinos were reintroduced in the 1980s and have been bred to healthy populations.
White rhinos are usually easy to see on the western lakeshore. Rothschild’s giraffes, buffalos, and hippos are numerous as well. Lucky visitors might see lions, which occasionally climb trees. Leopards are present as well, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot one.
For a small park, Lake Nakuru really is breathtaking, with the Rift Valley escarpment, dotted with euphorbia trees, rising up from the lakeshore. Heavy mist sometimes shrouds the lake and yellow fever trees, which seem to glow in the early morning. The view from the Out of Africa Lookout is as close as you can get to the famous plane journey scene from the film ‘Out of Africa.’
The main activity in Lake Nakuru is the guided or self-guided game drive, which will allow you to explore the park for wildlife watching and birding. In the park’s south, you can see the moderately impressive Makalia Falls, where waters cascade through a cleft in the rock surrounded by acacia forest.
The usual problem with wildlife watching in the wet season (March to May) is that animals disperse when the rains come. This is not an issue at Lake Nakuru, though, because the national park is ringed by fencing. Still, the wet weather has been known to spoil more than a few game drives, so you might want to visit in the drier months of the year (June to February).
Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa’s most famous parks and undoubtedly among the continent’s best places to see animals. The wildlife viewing is superb throughout the year. The grassy plains and regular rainfall support a huge population of herbivores, in turn attracting many predators. All three big cats are relatively easy to see.
The yearly wildebeest migration through the park is one of the world’s most amazing wildlife spectacles. The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is where 2.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles follow the rains in search of new grass every year.
They make their way from Serengeti National Park (in northern Tanzania) to the Masai Mara, and they usually cross into Kenya in July or August.
Although the timing is never guaranteed, August and September are when you’re most likely to see the herds undertaking the famous crossings of the Mara River in Kenya. They slowly head back into the Serengeti around October.
The Masai Mara is one of the best parks in Africa for seeing big cats, especially lions. Even leopards are quite used to vehicles and you can see their natural behavior, while cheetahs inhabit the open savannah, hunting or seeking their next meal. Of the other Big Five, elephant and buffalo are also plentiful, but black rhino is trickier and they only roam in the Mara Triangle area.
Grassland savannah dominates the landscape in the Masai Mara, but there are pockets of acacia woodland and riparian forest around the Mara River, and rocky hills intersperse the plains. The Maasai word ‘Mara,’ meaning spotted, refers to these dots in the landscape.
In the north, the Oloololo Escarpment (also called the Siria Escarpment) marks the northern boundary of the Mara. It has stunning views from the top take in the whole ecosystem.
The main activity on organized safaris is guided game drives. East of the Mara River, dozens of vehicles frequently gather around big cat sightings. Crowding is less common in the Mara Triangle and forbidden in most conservancies. Early morning hot-air balloon rides are very popular as well.
Night drives and walking safaris are forbidden in the national reserve but are usually offered in the conservancies. Self-guided game drives are permitted in the Mara Triangle but not in the conservancies. In June 2024, the reserve authorities placed a ban on self-drive activities east of the Mara River. All other safari vehicles are still permitted in the reserve.
