Autumn Trekking Safari in Bulgaria

Itinerary

Day 1: Sofia to Velingrad

In the morning, you will do one hour walking tour in the hard of Sofia then visit Boyana church nearby Sofia (one hour). The program is followed by a transfer to Varvara, a small village. From there, you will take the scenic narrow train to Velingrad from 12:30 to 2:05 p.m.

The journey begins in western Rhodope ranges. The scenery is varied as well as beautiful, with a mixture of deciduous forests conifers, and open pasture. Arrive in Velingrad for lunch wherein a reservation is made for you at a restaurant.

After lunch, you will visit Lepenica Cave, one of the few caves untouched by civilization, yet open to the public. But this is exactly where its appeal lies. An additional entrance and equipment fee applies. Afterwards, transfer to the Fotinovo and overnight in guest house wherein you will have a welcome dinner. In the evening and early in the morning, you will go spay the wild animals.

Day 2: Fotinski waterfalls - Batashki Snejnik peak

Wake up at 5 a.m. for animal watching, the trek to the venue is an easy one. The program is followed by breakfast. Afterwards, take a short walk to the Fotinski waterfalls, a cascade of three waterfalls. The highest is 17 meters. Spectacular sight is guaranteed and you will have an engagement in a rural tourism, meeting the local mountain people.

Transfer to Peshtera afterwards where you will have lunch in this small city. After lunch, visit a small but rich communist museum situated there.

Campfirebg has kept the best for the end of the day - a panoramic breathtaking view from the summit Batashki Snejnik (2081 meters altitude), the sixth highest in the Rhodope mountain. From the summit, you can see the Batak dam, part of Rila and Pirin mountain. Afterwards, overnight in Pashino Bardo Lodge.

Day 3: Mantaritsa Nature Reserve - Beglika Reservoir

Today, you will go through Mantaritsa Nature Reserve, nestling a more than 150-year-old forest with spruces and a species of pines native to the western Balkans. Its fauna is rather impressive - during the months of April and May, the capercaillie could be seen, a wood grouse included in the IUCN Red List. In the conservation area, there is a big chance to see wild animals.

At the and of the path, you will reach the Dam Beglika, one of the highest and most beautiful dams in Bulgaria. At this spot, you can rent a bicycle or kayak. The plan is to paddle with kayaks, but if you are scared of water sports you can get a bike. You will spend the night on the waterside of Beglika Reservoir.

Day 4: Borino - Buynovska River - Devin

Wake up early in the morning again to watch wild animals. Afterwards, you will be transferred to the village of Borino where the Devil’s Path starts from. The Flower of Orpheus lives in the gorge - its Latin name is “Haberlea Rhodopensis” and the plant is endemic to the area.

Penetrating through the karts massif, the Buynovska River has curious natural formations and has also shaped a few waterfalls. The Buynovsko Gorge is included in the 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. Its end will take you to the tourist route to the village of Yagodina. You will spend the night at SPA hotel in the city of Devin. In the evening and early in the morning, you will go spay the wild animals.

Day 5: Plovidiv and departure

Have a short walk through the Struilisa path, located nearby Devin. Take your lunch in Devin and afterwards head to Plovdiv to visit the old town for two hours. Visit its Roman theater, Roman stadium, and houses from the revival period. At about 4 p.m., you will leave for Sofia and have a farewell diner in special restaurant.

Notes:

  • The hiking times mentioned do not include breaks and are based on the average hiker's speed of four to five kilometers per hour on flat terrain.
  • The hiking time will vary depending on the terrain and your hiking experience.
  • The trek is difficult to challenging for fit hikers with good hiking experience in Alpine terrains and you must come prepared with suitable hiking boots and clothes for mountain trekking.
  • The guide has the right to change the route upon unexpected circumstances.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Sofia Airport (SOF), the nearest airport to the meeting place. However, Campfirebg can arrange airport transfers from Plovdiv Airport (PDV) or even Niš Constantine the Great Airport (INI) in Serbia if it is requested.
