The Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 11,747 square kilometers. Tsavo East National Park is by far the biggest of Kenya’s parks. At more than 13,700 square kilometers, Tsavo East is nine times bigger than the Masai Mara National Reserve, indeed you could fit the whole of the Mara reserve into the southern tip of Tsavo East National Park, opened in April 1948.
It is located near the village of Voi in the Taita-Taveta District of Coast Province. The park is divided into east and west sections by the A109 road and a railway. Named for the Tsavo River, which flows west to east through the national park, it borders the Chyulu Hills National Park, and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in Tanzania.
Tsavo East National Park is a beautiful landscape and proximity to the Mombasa Coast makes it a popular Kenya safari destination, Tsavo East National Park is accredited as one of the world's leading bio-diversity strongholds, bushy grassland, and open plains alternating with savanna and semi-arid acacia scrub and woodlands. Green swathes cross the Tsavo East National Park where the river banks give rise to lush vegetation.
Tsavo West National Park covers 7,065 square kilometers or 2,728 square miles, which is a little less than a third of the total area comprising all of Kenya's national parks. With its diverse habitats of riverine forest, palm thickets, rocky outcrops and ridges, mountains, and plains, it is more attractive and certainly more accessible than its counterpart Tsavo East National Park.
In the north of Tsavo West National Park, heavily wooded hills dominate, while in the south, there are wonderful views over the Serengeti Plains. Take a boat ride or go birding on Lake Jipe, one of the most important wetlands in Kenya. If you like birds, you'll be keen to get a glimpse of the white backed night heron, African skimmers, and palm-nut vultures.
The lake, which lies in the park's southwest corner on the Kenya - Tanzania border, is fed from the snows of Kilimanjaro and the North Pare mountains. There is evidence of volcanic activity everywhere in the Tsavo West National Park, especially where recent lava flows absorb the rainfall. In one spectacular spot, this rainfall, having traveled underground for 40 kilometers (25 miles) or so, gushes up in a pair of pools at Mzima Springs, in the north of the park.
The Tsavo West National Park is located in the Coast Province of Kenya. Although Tsavo West National Park and Tsavo East National Park were once a single mega national park, they were separated decades ago, along a line coinciding with the Mombasa highway, and they feel like quite distinct national parks with different ecosystems, the open, flat-to-undulating plains and scattered bush of Tsavo East National Park and the much more wooded, hilly landscapes, dotted with volcanic cones and dramatic, black lava flows, that characterize Tsavo West National Park.
During this safari, you will be served three daily meals. You will enjoy some of your meals at the place that you will be staying at. They offer different kind of food, from vegetarians to non-vegetarians.
On the second day, you will enjoy a buffet lunch at Lion Hill Lodge Tsavo. The dining room and bar there overlooks the panorama of the Tsavo East National Park with views of wildlife immediately below in the valley. All kinds of game including elephants, lions, cheetah, leopard, and other small wildlife is regularly seen from the dining room area.
A traveler is almost guaranteed to find a mouth-watering buffet with a wide variety of meats to fresh salads and drinks. The food is relatively safe to try which caters for international tourists. Soft drinks and alcohol are also readily available, cheap and safe to drink. Let Bruno Safaris know your dietary requirements in advance.
Please book your flight to arrive at Moi International Airport (MBA). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Bruno Safaris will pick you up from the airport.
