You will arrive in Arusha late in the afternoon where the tour ends.
This safari will take place in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Empakai Crater and lake, Ol Doinyo Lengai, Nainokanoka and Nayobi Village, and Lake Natron.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is situated some 190 kilometers west of Arusha, between Lake Manyara and Serengeti National Park. Covering approximately 8,288 square kilometers, Ngorongoro Conservation Area consists of the Ngorongoro Crater itself, the Olduvai Gorge, Ndutu, Empakai Crater, and Ol Doinyo Lengai Mountain.
The altitude at the crater rim is about 2,286 meters above sea level and temperatures can get quite chilly in the evening. The crater is home to many species of wild game and birds. With the exception of the impala and topi, due to fierce competition with the wildebeest and the giraffe because there is not much to eat at tree level, almost every species of African plains mammal live in the crater including the black rhino.
The birdlife, which includes the flamingo, is mainly seasonal and is also affected by the ratio of soda to fresh water in Lake Magadi on the crater floor. The Maasai, the main residents of Ngorongoro, are pastoralists who move widely with their herds of cattle, sheep, goat, and donkeys in search of pasture and water.
In the recent years, the Maasai have been encouraged to work on the land to supplement their traditional diet of milk, blood, and meat. The Ngorongoro Crater, which is the central attraction in the area, is the largest caldera in the world that has its walls intact. The sight of the Ngorongoro Crater is simply stunning. It is one of the wonders of the world.
The major volcano last erupted in 2008, rising at an altitude 2,886 meters. It is a unique and an extremely fascinating volcano that towers above the East African Rift Valley in Northern Tanzania, just south of Lake Natron. It is the only volcano in the world that sometimes erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a highly fluid lava that contains almost no silicon.
It is sacred to the Maasai. They still perform ceremonial ritual offerings in the mountain's “kitchen” to god. After the climb, you can take a tour around Lake Natron. Lake Natron is the largest lake in East Africa, which accommodates numerous flamingos and other birdlife, zebras, elephants, and giraffes. All can be viewed on the walking safari from Ngare-Sero, Engaruka, and Loliondo accompanied by armed rangers.
The alkaline lake is an important source of flamingos which can be observed throughout the year.
Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. Home to millions of tiny crustaceans, the lake is heaven for thousands of lesser flamingos and it is one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth.
During this safari, your daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided for you by Brown Parrot Safaris. You will also be provided with one liter of complimentary bottled mineral water per person per day.
On the sixth day of your safari, after a walk up the stream, you may take an excellent swim in the river under the waterfall to wash out all the dust and cool down from the hot summer sun. The exciting part of the day is when you wake up at midnight and transfer to the mountain where you will ascend Ol Doinyo Lengai at 9,650 feet in the heart of the Maasai country and locally regarded as a sacred mountain.
You will be on top of the mountain in the early morning for the best sunrise photos and view. Descend down by mid-morning to the foothills of Ol Doinyo Lengai where your safari vehicles will transfer you to the campsite for a brunch.
