The Kinabatangan River
Kinabatangan is Sabah’s longest river and one of the most exciting and accessible places to explore the rich biodiversity of Sabah, Borneo. The river offers an incredible opportunity to see large range if wildlife including Borneo’s unique Proboscis Monkey, the Orang Utan, Bornean Pygmy Elephant, crocodiles, otters and countless rare and beautiful birds. All the eight species of hornbill found in Borneo make the area their home.
The inhabitants of the Kinabatangan region are mostly Orang Sungai of mixed ancestry including Suluk, Bugis, Brunei, Bajaus, and Chinese. A trip up the Kinabatangan River Cruise at dawn or dusk is the best opportunity to see the all the wildlife here.
Lower Kinabatangan Segama Wetland
This is Sabah’s First and Malaysia’s largest Ramsar site in the state of Sabah, comprising three Forest Reserves: Trusan Kinabatangan Forest Reserve, Kulamba Wildlife reserve, and Kuala Maruap and Kuala Segama Forest Reserve. The site is recognize as an internationally important wetland for its undisturbed ecosystem.
