You will discover an authentic Borneo, meet its various ethnic groups, its fauna and rainforests whose protection is a priority. Far away from clichés and the usual tourist places, BORNÉO À LA CARTE is committed to make you discover the charm of this enigmatic part of the world.
Your accommodation will be at a simple lodge next to an Iban longhouse. A mosquito net, simple mattress, and bed linen will be provided and basic sanitary facilities are available.
Depart from your city hotel in Kuching on a drive of about four to five hours on the Pan Borneo Highway to Batang Ai. Along the way, you will make a stop for lunch.
Upon arrival at the lake of Batang Ai, you will embark on a ride of about one and a half to two hours (depending on water levels) on a typical local longboat across the lake and up the river into the ‘Ulu’ (which literally translates into ‘upriver’ and describes the interior).
On this boat ride, you will pass through the farm lands of the Iban people, one of the many native ethnic groups in Borneo, as well as dense jungle vegetation, and finally arrive in the stunning rainforest landscape of the area called Ulu Ai, where you will spend the next few days.
Your accommodation will be a simple lodge next to an Iban longhouse. A mosquito net, simple mattress, and bed linens will be provided and basic sanitary facilities are available. Meals served will be simple local meals prepared by your guide and / or the villagers of the Iban longhouse.
You will spend these days together with your guide, trekking through the forest in search of Borneo’s primates. The area of Ulu Ai is adjacent to the Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to the biggest population of wild orangutans in Sarawak. Together with the Indonesian Betung Kerihun National Park, it forms the largest trans-border national park in Borneo.
Besides orangutans, you might also spot maroon langurs and long-tailed macaques. Other wildlife species found in this area are sun bears, oriental clawed otters, barking deer, wild boar, as well as a myriad of birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles. Please note that there are no guarantees that you will see all or any of the mentioned animals.
Accommodation at the lodge. If you are adventurous enough, you can opt for a night of camping in the jungle in order to improve your chances to spot wildlife. You will need to bring your own equipment for jungle camping. BORNÉO À LA CARTE will provide you with a list of things to bring.
Today you will return to Kuching the same way you came on day one, with a stop for lunch en-route. In case you were not lucky to spot the red apes during your treks at Ulu Ai, you will visit the Semenggoh Nature Reserve today in the afternoon.
At Semenggoh Nature Reserve, you will get the a chance to see some semi-wild orangutans that had been rescued as orphans or confiscated from illegal pet trade and underwent rehabilitation training in order to have a chance at life in the jungle again.
Observe the impressive big apes at feeding time as they come swinging high up in the trees towards the feeding platform to grab a meal of fruits. However, please note that the animals roam free in the nature reserve and are not in cages and therefore sightings here as well cannot be guaranteed.
After this amazing experience, transfer back to your hotel in Kuching’s city center.
Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia (around 125,000 square kilometers) and is located in the north of the island of Borneo, adjacent to the sultanate of Brunei, the other Malaysian state Sabah and Kalimantan (Indonesian part of Borneo). The northern coast of Sarawak is bordered by the South China Sea.
Sarawak is easily accessible by plane, mainly via Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The region’s main income resources are fisheries, oil and gas, rubber, timber, palm oil, cocoa, and pepper. Large areas in Sarawak are still covered by equatorial rainforest, which is home to many endemic species of flora and fauna.
During this tour, you will be provided with three breakfasts, four lunches, and three dinners. Meals served will be simple local meals prepared by your guide and/or the villagers of the Iban longhouse.
