There, you will witness the seven7th wonder of the world, the Great Wildebeest Migration. Also see the Great Rift Valley, which is the home to the pink flamingos, as you epitomize your Kenyan tour.

Bison Safaris wishes you a memorable safari.

Lake Nakuru National Park

On the floor of the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by wooded and bushy grassland, lies the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park. Flanked by rocky escarpments, pockets of acacia forest, and at least one waterfall, the park is gorgeous year-round and is home to both black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, hippos, and the endangered Rothschild’s giraffes.

Before departing to Amboseli, visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself and to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, picnic, and game drives.

Nakuru was traditionally viewed as a flamingo lake par excellence. Several decades ago, up to two million lesser flamingos (maybe a third of the world’s population) could be seen there, massing in the warm alkaline water to feed on the abundant blue-green algae cultivated by their own droppings.

The masses of pink flamingos at Lake Nakuru draws guests from around the world, but the population at the lake varies, based on the alkalinity of the lake. Higher levels of precipitation decrease the alkalinity, leading to less algae for the birds.

The park is also famous for its rhinoceros sanctuary, in which 70 white rhinoceros and 25 critically endangered black rhinoceros can be seen. This concentration is one of the largest in Kenya, and makes the park the ideal place to visit if you are eager to see these beautiful creatures in the wild.

Lake Nakuru is often combined with visits to its neighboring lakes, Lake Bogoria and Lake Naivasha. While not within the park boundaries, both lakes offer distinct experiences that are worth considering.

  • Location: Roughly two and a half hours' drive from Nairobi
  • To do: Game drives, cruise on Lake Naivasha, hot springs at Lake Bogoria, and Crescent Island walking safari
  • Known for: Flamingos and rhinoceros

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Dream of Africa and chances are you will dream of Maasai Mara. It is the home to Africa’ Big Five species, as well as an abundance of other wildlife, including wildebeest, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, and many more. It borders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Often described as nature’s greatest spectacle, the Great Migration is one of Africa’s most dramatic stories. It occurs every year between July and October, when more than 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and elands move mysteriously from the Serengeti in Tanzania to Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of grass and water.

This movement offers nature lovers the opportunity to view predators such as the lion, hyenas, crocodiles, and cheetahs prey on the wildebeests. This mass movement is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
