Culture and Birdwatching Tour in Mexico

Forty endemics and many subspecies of birds along with other interesting flora and fauna have made the Yucatan Peninsula home among the Maya ruins and they co-existed with Maya Nation one of the ancestral cultures in Mexico. Along this tour, you will focus on birding but you are not listers so you will also enjoy Mayan Ruins and Pyramids, old sanctuaries, national parks, beautiful landscape, flora, fauna, and culture will combine to make this birding tour more meaningful.

You will be staying in different hotels, all four-star, and boutique, colonial-style accommodations. There will be an ensuite bathroom with hot / cold water. Some rooms are equipped with two beds for solo travelers of the same gender sharing a room, others have one bed for couples. A solo visitor can request a private room and the single supplement fee will apply.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Welcome to the Yucatan Peninsula! Arrive at Cancun Airport (CUN) where the guide will greet you. In the evening, you will enjoy a welcome dinner and briefing.

Day 2: Enjoy birding at Cozumel Island

Early in the morning catch up a beautiful sunrise from the ocean, go in search of Cozumel endemics (wren, hummingbird, and vireo), but there are many more birds too such as warblers, sparrows, and waterfowl that may be present. Then, get some free time.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 3: Mayan Ruins

You drive to the archeological site to explore the Mayan ruins in search of Black-headed trogon, turquoise-browed motmot, Yucatan vireo, Yucatan jay, and more, in addition, learn from Mayan dynasties.

Day 4: Chichen Itza world’s heritage site and the oldest astronomical observatory In Mesoamerica

Today you will get to the oldest observatory in the world and largest calendar all built with stone. It is considered a world heritage site and is home to Yucatan gnatcatcher, Yucatan Flycatcher, and many more birds.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 5: EK Balam and Motmots

You will visit a hole in the ground caused by a meteor now full of cristal water. The area is home to Turquoise-browed Motmot and many more birds (bring your bathing suit and towel in case you want to refresh in the cenote).

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 6: Biosphere reserve - birds sanctuary 1 (by land)

Enjoy a visit to a birding biosphere reserve with thousands of birds to encounter many endemics and subspecies.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 7: Biosphere reserve - bird sanctuary 2 (by water)

Enjoy a visit to a birding biosphere reserve with thousands of birds and other wildlife, beautiful vistas, and crystal waters. Bring your bathing suit if you want to refresh in the crystal waters.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 8: Mayan ruins, Colonial village, and birds you might have missed

You will visit other Mayan ruins, a colonial city from the 1600s, and along the way, birding for ones you could have missed.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 9: Relax, birding, and farewell diner

Enjoy the day at leisure. Go birding in the surroundings and farewell diner with a surprise!!!

Day 10: Departure

Today is the end of the birding tour in Mexico. Enjoy coffee and pastries and return home. Fly out of Cancun airport (CUN). Keep the good memories and come back soon!

This birding tour takes place in Yucatan and Cozumel, Mexico. Following your arrival, a guide will meet you at the International Airport of Cancun Mexico (CUN).
