Accommodation

During this tour, you will stay for two nights at Hotel El Mesón de María or similar in Antigua, one night at Hotel Ruinas Resort in Huehuetenango, one night at Las Cumbres or similar in Quetzaltenango, two nights at Los Tarrales Natural Reserve in Patulul, two nights at Posada de Santiago in Santiago Atitlán, one night at Paseo del Rancho, one night at Hotel Posada Montaña del Quetzal in Cobán, and one night at Radisson Hotel And Suites Guatemala City in Guatemala City.

Program

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Antigua Guatemala

There will be a meet-and-greet at La Aurora International Airport (GUA) and transportation to Antigua Guatemala. Then, you will spend two nights at Hotel El Mesón de María or similar in Antigua Guatemala.

Day 2: Volcán de Agua slopes - San Cristóbal El Alto - Finca El Pilar

At 07:00, you will be transferred to Volcán de Agua slopes in quest of ocellated quail, lesser roadrunner, blue-throated motmot, white-eared ground sparrow, and rusty sparrow. Afterward, you will be transferred to San Cristóbal El Alto for birding and breakfast at a local restaurant with the breathtaking views to the volcanos. Then, you will be transferred to Finca El Pilar for birding in the hummingbird feeders and around the farm.

Day 3: Antigua Guatemala - Restaurante Rincon Suizo - Tecpán area - Huehuetenango

At 06:00, you will depart from Antigua Guatemala toward Tecpán Guatemala. You will have your breakfast in Tecpán. After that, you will enjoy your birdwatching tour in the Tecpan reserve where you will find interesting endemic species of the north Central American highlands like the pink-headed warbler, blue-throated motmot, rufous-browed wren, garnet-throated hummingbird, and amethyst-throated hummingbird.

During migratory (winter) season, you will find Townsend’s, Wilson's, black-and-white, and red-faced warblers together with the resident slate-throated redstart, pink-headed, crescent-chested, and olive warbler, as well as Hutton's vireo. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Huehuetenango and spend one night at Hotel Ruinas Resort.

Day 4: Huehuetenango - Todos Santos Cuchumatán - Quetzaltenango

Todos Santos is a region with a unique landscape in Guatemala, which combines sub-alpine meadows, rocky areas, and slow-growing vegetation due to climatic conditions and altitude (3,850 meters). It is one of the geologically oldest areas and has the highest mountain formations of Central America.

This is one of the areas with the greatest biological diversity and endemism in the country where a number of endangered species of flora and fauna can be seen like Guatemalan fir (Abies guatemalensis), Hartweg's pine (Pinus hartwegii), huitum (Juniperus standleyi), Maya mouse (Peromyscus mayensis), and Cuchumatanes salamander (Dendrotriton chujorum) among others. Avian species related to this area are Goldman’s warbler, which will be the first endemic species of Guatemala, black-capped siskin, golden-crowned kinglet, broad-tailed hummingbird, common raven, and Savannah sparrow.

You will take a morning transfer to Todos Santos national park (two hours) in quest of Goldman’s warbler. This species will be your first endemic species and is located in a small area in Huehuetenango and easy to spot in this park. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to your lodging at Las Cumbres or similar in Quetzaltenango. After check-in, you will take a birding tour again at Fuentes Georginas. The target is the fulvous owl and Mexican whip-poor-will.

Day 5: Fuentes Georginas - Los Tarrales Natural Reserve

You will experience a morning birdwatching in the very humid subtropical forest at Fuentes Georginas. In addition to being a great birding destination, Fuentes Georginas is a hot spring with developed pools. Here, you might hope to spot the wine-throated and garnet-throated hummingbird, cinnamon-bellied flowerpiercer, and ruddy-capped nightingale-thrush. Then, a midday transfer will take you to Los Tarrales Natural Reserve. In the afternoon, you will go birdwatching around the lodge at Los Tarrales. Afterward, you will spend two nights at Los Tarrales Natural Reserve.

Day 6: Los Tarrales Natural Reserve (full day)

There will be time for coffee and then you will be transferred to La Isla area at Volcán Atitlán in quest of azure-rumped tanager, rufous sabrewing, emerald-chinned hummingbird, tody motmot, quails, and doves among other species of the highlands. You will have breakfast at the place (boxed breakfast). Then, you will continue with an afternoon birding tour around La Laguneta. This area offers a good opportunity to find out species such as white-bellied chachalaca, yellow-naped parrot, and rufous-breasted spinetail among others.

Day 7: Los Tarrales Natural Reserve - Santiago Atitlán

There will be time for coffee and then you will be transferred to La Rinconada area where it is possible to find species such as long-tailed manakin, cinnamon hummingbird, and rufous-naped wren among others. Afterward, a midday transfer will take you to Lake Atitlán then Santiago. You will go birdwatching around the lake in the afternoon then spend two nights at Posada de Santiago.

Day 8: Santiago Atitlán - Volcán San Pedro - Santiago Atitlán

You will take a boat ride toward San Pedro La Laguna where you will climb Volcán San Pedro in quest of horned guan and other interesting species such as Prevost’s ground sparrow, amethyst-throated hummingbird, slender sheartail, rufous sabrewing, violet sabrewing, bushy-crested jay, olive-sided towhee, chestnut-sided shrike-vireo, rufous-browed peppershrike, mountain trogon, bar-winged oriole, and ocellated quail among others. Lunch will be served en route (boxed lunch). Please note that this tour to Volcán San Pedro requires a high effort, you can change this activity for a lake tour by motorboat.

Day 9: Santiago Atitlán - Mirador Rey Tepepul - El Rancho

There will be a morning birdwatching at Mirador Rey Tepepul. This park is located in Santiago Atitlán, in the western slopes of Volcán Atitlán. This reserve has an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level and there is also a subtropical humid forest. This kind of forest is common at the foot of the Pacific Slope of Guatemala, with an average annual rainfall of 1,500 millimeters.

Some bird species you can spot here are blue-crowned chlorophonia, azure-rumped tanager, slender-sheartail hummingbird, bar-winged oriole, elegant euphonia, crested guan, emerald toucanet, chestnut-sided shrike-vireo, white-eared ground sparrow, green-throated mountaingem, rusty sparrow, black hawk-eagle, Pacific parakeet, and eventually quetzal. At 11:00, you will be transferred to Guatemala City and continue to El Rancho (six hours). You will spend one night at Paseo del Rancho.

Day 10: Dry Scrub Forest - Biotopo del Quetzal

After breakfast, you will depart to El Rancho area for a birdwatching at Chaparral or Thorn Dry Scrub Biome. This natural reserve is located within the municipality of El Jícaro in El Progreso Department and protects a very fragile and threatened biome in Guatemala. This reserve is located in the central valley of Guatemala, between 700 and 1,000 meters above sea level, with an average of 600 millimeters of annual rainfall. It is characterized by the abundance of cactus and thorny plants.

Some birds associated with this ecosystem are lesser roadrunner, russet-crowned motmot, white-lored gnatcatcher, streak-backed oriole, lesser ground cuckoo, yellow-billed cuckoo, stripe-headed sparrow, ash-throated flycatcher, Altamira oriole, and turquoise-browed motmot. Besides birds, you will also have the opportunity to spot Heloderma horridum charlesbogerti and Ctenosaura Palearis. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Biotopo del Quetzal for one night of lodging at Hotel Posada Montaña del Quetzal.

Day 11: Biotopo del Quetzal - Guatemala City

You will enjoy a morning birdwatching tour at Los Ranchitos del Quetzal to enjoy the fantastic flight of the resplendent quetzal as well species such as highland guan, violet sabrewing, bushy-crested jay, black robin, and chestnut-headed oropendola among others. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Guatemala City. You will have dinner on your own and then spend one night of lodging at Radisson Hotel And Suites Guatemala City.

Day 12: Back home

After breakfast, you will be transferred to La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in time to catch your international flight back home. This is the end of Birding Expeditions' services.

Guatemala

Biological diversity has enabled Guatemala to stand among the 25 countries with the most variety of natural resources in the world. Millions of species living in its varied ecosystems, 720 species of birds, 35 of them are regional endemic (Guatemala and Mexico frontiers), and a world-class bird lover has to visit Guatemala at least once in life to watch them. There are also around forty species which only can be found in Central America and Guatemala is the perfect place to watch the better populations of them and you do not have to visit another place in the region.

Food

During this safari, you will be served with daily American breakfast except on arrival day, together with 10 lunches and nine dinners. Drinks are not included during lunches and dinners.
