Wine tasting

Wine tasting in Darling can be enjoyed at Groote Post, Darling Cellars or Cloof Wine Estate. It all depends on how much time you have during the flower season and if the guests are interested in wine tasting. It also depends on the day of the tour as some of these wine estates don't open for business on a Sunday.

This safari and guided tour will take place in Western Cape, South Africa. You will stay in Langebaan and visit Darling, West Coast National Park, Hopefield, and Moorreesburg. The nature reserves you are going to visit en route to Langebaan are wildflower reserves dedicated to the conservation of the many different spring flowers that are only blooming during August and September each year. It includes:

  • Waylands Wildflower Reserve
  • Renosterveld Wildflower Reserve
  • Tienie Versfeld Wildflower Reserve

Western Cape is the only place in South Africa where you can stand at one lookout point in the West Coast National Park and spot Table Mountain towering over 140 kilometers away in another national park, the Table Mountain National Park. During August and September, the dry and semi-desert like landscape turns into a tapestry of flowers. The Cape floral kingdom is the smallest floral kingdom, covering an area of 90,000 square kilometers and yet is the most diverse of all the plant kingdoms.

Langebaan hosts over 250 bird species - over a quarter of South Africa's total. Bird hides can be found at Abrahamskraal, Geelbek or Seeberg. Some of the earliest evidence, found anywhere in the world, of the appearance of cultural traditions has been discovered in caves and rock shelters along the south and the west coast of the Western Cape, which makes the West Coast National Park a very important protected area.

Human footprints left in dune sands, and subsequently preserved when the sand was cemented into limestone, show that anatomically modern humans were wondering the locality of the West Coast National Park about 111,000 years ago. Approximately 30% of the world's population of African black oystercatchers breed on the five islands located within the lagoon. The five islands of Saldanha Bay located in the lagoon provide a home for nearly a quarter of a million seabirds.

West Coast National Park

The West Coast National Park and more importantly the Langebaan Lagoon was registered as an important non-breeding site for hundreds of thousands of Palaearctic migrant waders during the austral summer. It is also registered as a wetland of international importance (Ramsar 1990) with about 32% of South Africa's salt marshes. The five islands of Saldanha Bay to the north of the Langebaan Lagoon provide a home for nearly a quarter of a million seabirds, many of which are endemic to the nearshore regions of South Africa and Namibia. The lagoon has a rich diversity of marine invertebrates which supports approximately 10% of the coastal wader population in South Africa.

Hopefield is a settlement in West Coast District Municipality and is situated on the R45 between Malmesbury and Vredenburg. The town is east of Saldanha Bay and Langebaan, 40 kilometers southeast of Vredenburg and 120 kilometers north of Cape Town. Its claim to fame is that it is the oldest town on the West Coast and here you will enjoy an informative bee talk at the Simply Bee Observation Centre which will enhance the important role of bees and bee-keeping, the fynbos found in the area and the types of honey that are produced in this particular area.

The Wheat Industry Museum

The Wheat Industry Museum situated in Moorreesburg is in the heart of the Swartland which is the main wheat growing area in the Western Cape. This is not only an excellent display of the history of the area but is also dedicated to the history of wheat farming, the many uses of wheat and how this industry has grown and shaped the local economy. Moorreesburg is surrounded by lime green wheat and canola fields and is an awesome sight to behold during the winter months of June, July, and August.
