Check-out Time:

You will spend your first and last night of the journey at Ilboru Safari Lodge. For the other days of your journey, you will be accommodated in a tent with sleeping mattresses at Simba Camp, a camp near Shira Hut, a camp near Moir Hut, Lava Tower Camp, Karanga Campsite, Barafu Campsite, and Mweka Forest Camp.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

You will arrive anytime at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Avocet Tanzania Safaris Ltd. will arrange a private transfer from the airport to Arusha at Ilboru Safari Lodge, where the rest of the day is at leisure. You will stay at Ilboru Safari Lodge, which is beautifully located on the slope of Mount Meru and is a perfect place to prepare for your adventure. You will gather at the hotel for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. Avocet Tanzania Safaris Ltd. will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.

Day 2: Shira one (3,550 meters)

You will take a ride to Londorossi, the national park's gate, to complete the necessary registration formalities before driving a short distance on a steep track through farmland and plantations (9,200 feet). You will continue climbing steadily on foot through shrub forests and stands of giant heather to reach the rim of Shira Plateau (11,000 feet). The views of the surrounding plains open up as you approach your first camp, Simba Camp.

  • Walking time: 5 - 6 hours

Day 3: Shira Hut (3,840 meters)

Today is an easy day to help acclimatization and to explore the grassy moorland and volcanic rock formations of the plateau. You will walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral (12,300 feet), a huge buttress of rock surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles. There is a tangible sense of wilderness here, especially when the afternoon mists roll in. From your camp near Shira Hut (12,600 feet), you will take in the unforgettable views of Mount Meru as she floats among the clouds.

  • Walking time: 3 - 5 hours

Day 4: Moir Hut (4,200 meters)

The morning walk is a steady climb away from the moorland of Shira Plateau to reach the broad upland desert beneath the Lent Hills, with expansive views in all directions. After lunch at the camp close to Moir Hut (13,800 feet), there is the option of a more strenuous afternoon walk to reach the summit of the Lent Hills (15,400 feet). You can explore the area beneath the Northern Ice Fields, a remote place rarely visited by tourists, with unusual views of Kibo. Few visitors get to this remote corner of Kilimanjaro.

  • Walking time: 3 - 4 hours

Day 5: Lava Tower Camp (4,550 meters)

You will enjoy a morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, walking on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch at the Lava Tower (14,900 feet), there is a steep but spectacular afternoon walk on the rocky lower slopes of the Western Breach. This afternoon excursion is highly recommended for acclimatization purposes and for the superb views of hanging glaciers on both sides of the breach.

  • Walking time: 4 - 5 hours

Day 6: Karanga Campsite (4,000 meters)

A steep descent into the bottom of Barranco Valley (12,800 feet) leads you to the famous Barranco Wall and its steep climb. At the top, the undulating trail crosses the flanks of Kibo with superb vistas of the Southern Ice Fields. The terrain is volcanic scree, with pockets of vegetation in sheltered hollows and a powerful sense of mountain wilderness. The next camp is Karanga Camp (13,100 feet), the last water point on the approach to the summit.

  • Walking time: 5 - 6 hours

Day 7: Barafu Campsite (4,600 meters)

You will follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach Barafu Hut (14,800 feet) for lunch. There is a short acclimatization hike to the plateau at the bottom of the southeast valley (15,700 feet). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the early morning final ascent.

  • Walking time: 3 - 4 hours

Day 8: Mweka Forest Camp (3100 meters)

You will start your ascent by torchlight at about 01:00 so that you can be up on the crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take you to Stella Point (5,735 meters) in about five or six hours. You will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi.

Those who are still feeling strong can make the two-hour round trip from Stella Point along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 meters), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast and after some refreshment, you will continue to descend to reach your final Mweka Forest Camp.

  • Walking time: 13 - 15 hours

Day 9: Mweka Forest Camp to Mweka gate (1,650 meters)

A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes you to Mweka gate and transfer back to Arusha for an overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge.

  • Walking time: 3 - 4 hours

Day 10

You will depart from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). The private departure transfer is included.

Kilimanjaro National Park takes in the area above the 8,850 feet or 2,700 meters on the mountain. It includes the moorland and highland zones, Shira Plateau, Kibo, and Mawenzi peaks. In addition, the park has six corridors or rights of way through the Kilimanjaro forest reserve. The forest reserve, which is also a game reserve, was established in 1921. The park was established in 1973 and officially opened in 1977.

Kilimanjaro stands a scant 205 miles south of the Equator, on the northern boundary of Tanzania. Its location on an open plain close to the Indian Ocean, and its great size and height strongly influence the climate, vegetation, animal life, and the climbing conditions. It is made up of three extinct volcanoes including Kibo 19,340 feet (5,895 meters), Mawenzi 16,896 feet (5,149 meters), and Shira 13,000 feet (3,962 meters).
