Sirimon route is considered by many as the easiest route on Mount Kenya to reach Point Lenana. The route is on the Northern side, there is no bamboo zone on this side so the forest gradually turns into moorland covered with giant heather. You will hike through Likii and Mackinder Valleys, through the wonderful Shipton's Caves that can be found in the rock wall to the left of the steep path just before reaching Shipton's Camp.
You will camp on your first night at the Old Moses Bandas and your second night at Shiptons Bandas. The accommodation is based on two persons sharing a double room or tent. Where possible, the rooms with private baths are provided. Single rooms are available at an additional cost, but cannot be guaranteed.
After your pick up in Nairobi, you will be driven for about 2,660 meters to Nanyuki town for lunch, traveling for crossing the equator en route to the Sirimon Park gate. From the gate, you will trek up through magnificent montane forest, bamboo, and giant heather zone before reaching the high altitude moorland and your first hut, the Old Moses Camp, for dinner and overnight.
This is a gentle trek of nine kilometers that takes three to four hours gaining an elevation of 680 meters.
After breakfast, you will follow the track uphill, forking right at the junction. After a water break, you will continue on the track crossing Ontulili River before turning right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Liki North River and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the Shipton Camp.
This camp is a surreal setting below the towering peaks and glacier. The resident population is of rock hyrax and sunbirds. You will trek for 4,200 meters, going up 900 meters and 14 kilometers for seven hours.
Today, you will leave the camp to reach Point Lenana (4,985 meters). Kick off will be at 3:00 a.m. to reach Point Lenana in time for the African sunrise. The climb starts on frozen screen and continues on a rocky track with some very minor scrambling. With a good light from the moon, you will barely need a torch. Without a good moonlighting, then the pollution-free sky bangs on the ground, giving you as good a view of the stars as almost anywhere on Earth.
The climb takes three to four hours to reach the Point Lenana Summit. To add to the exhilaration, Mount Kilimanjaro is visible from the horizon. At the summit, take photos of sunrise before descending down to Shipton Camp for your full breakfast and descend down to Old Moses and later to Sirimon Gate. The descent walk takes about seven to eight hours. You will arrive in Nairobi by 6:00 p.m. or later.
In this trekking safari, you will reach the peak of Mount Kenya, the Point Lenana, through the Sirimon Route.
