There, you will see reserve of almost one hundred thousand vicuñas, the camelids with the finest wool in the world. There are also other animals in extinction in Peru, such as the guanaco, the Suri, the taruca, etc.

Day 5

Day 6

You will have the option of hiking at night when most mammals are active but difficult to see. Easier to find are tarantulas and frogs with shapes and sounds as strange as their natural histories.

Day 10

  • Stop at Chuncho Claylick

Two hours from Refugio Amazonas, deep in the Tambopata National Reserve, you will stop at Chuncho Claylick. After a short walk (five minutes), you will have the opportunity to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special clays rich in sodium from the riverbank. El Chuncho clay lick probably attracts more large macaws than any other clay lick in the world and the sight of dozens of macaws taking flight is truly unforgettable. The details of the scale will depend on the weather and the amount of macaw activity since the birds do not visit the licking clay when it rains.

A trek of three to five kilometers will take you to the magnificent views of the Tambopata River snaking its way into the lowlands. The forest on this trail, regenerative in the old bamboo forest, is good for the howler monkey and the Dusky Titi monkey.

After dinner, scientists will offer an in-depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, theories for the use of clay licking, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations and threats to their conservation.

Day 11

  • Macaw Clay Lick

At dawn, on the clearest mornings of the year, when there is more activity, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this great riverfront in a strident, colorful show that inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discreetly located fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe green-winged macaws, scarlet and blue and gold and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. The departures are at dawn. Return to the lodge.

This five-kilometer trail covers the prototypical rainforest with immense trees crossed by streams and ponds. Among the figs, ceibas and shihuahuacos, you will look for squirrels, brown capuchins and spider monkeys, as well as peccaries. The TRC is within this habitat.

Ten minutes upstream from the lodge, there is a small pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to see waterfowl such as the Muscovite duck, sunbittern and hoatzin or shansho along with woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers, and parakeets that live around the pond.

Peru, the heart of the Inca empire, which gave birth to one of the most advanced civilizations of pre-Columbian America, became part of the Christian West as a result of the Spanish conquest of the 16th century. It became an independent republic on July 28th, 1821. Peru is situated in the central and western part of South America. Its neighbors on the north are Ecuador and Colombia; on east Brazil, on south-east Bolivia, on south Chile, and on the west the Pacific Ocean, a 200-mile zone of which constitutes its territorial waters. The total area of Peru is 1, 285, 213 square kilometers (496,092 square miles) and its population is more than 30 million.

The topography of Peru is one of the most varied in the world and includes all altitudes from sea level to the snow-covered peaks of the Andes, which reach a height of over 6,758 meters. All types of climate can be found from the heat of the coastal dunes at the virgin forest to the icy conditions of the Andean mountains, as can all types of country-side, from the desert and oasis kind near the pacific ocean to the fine valleys and peaceful mountain lakes near the cordillera, not forgetting the vast rivers and virgin forest of the Amazon.


Lima, the city of kings, as it was named by Francisco Pizarro, its founder, is situated on the shores of the Rimac River, a few minutes from the ocean. It is a modern city with zones where the colonial architecture stands out by its beauty. Many of the best museums about the pre-Columbian cultures in Peru are in Lima. The Pachacamac and Caral ruins (the oldest city in the Americas) are to be visited from Lima too. Unknown but spectacular, the Nor Yauyos region is a new touristic area with breathtaking landscapes plenty of cascades, lakes and Indian villages. The city is also one of the gastronomic capitals in the world. For golf lovers, there are six good golf courses in and around Lima.


Cusco, known as the archaeological capital of America, offers not only Machu Picchu and its Inca monuments and ruins, but also its art treasures, sculpture, and colonial goldsmiths' work to the tourist, the historian, and the culture lovers. Off the beaten path, spectacular places can also be easily visited, like the mythical Maukallaqta and Puma Orqo. Trekking and river rafting are also very important tourist attractions around Cuzco.


Puerto Maldonado, Tambopata is an exceptional almost virgin tropical jungle area, scenarios for adventure jungle trips and jungle lodge programs.
