During this wildlife tour, you will be staying at a camp provided by Amazon Reise Services & Tours SAC in Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Program

Day 1: Iquitos - Nauta - Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Program overview

  • Transfer to the city of Nauta
  • Navigation on the Marinon River
  • View of a large variety of river birds and dolphins
  • Arrive to the Arequipa community

Tour details:

In the morning, you will be welcomed at the airport and transfer to the operations office in Iquitos. You will also get a brief orientation while you are on your way to the main tourist attractions of the city. Next, you will be transferred to Nauta City (approximately 100 kilometers / two hours from Iquitos). After that, you will do upstream navigation on the Marañón River to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (80 kilometers south-west of Nauta / about two hours).

You will also do an observation of a great variety of birds including herons, hawks, horns cries, jacanas, parrots, and parakeets along the way, and it is also possible to see dolphins in the river. A box of lunch will be prepared. Later, you will fill in a guestbook in the reservation search. Next thing you will do is arriving at the community of Arequipa where the first camp will be installed, having a short walk through the nearby village, having dinner, and overnight at the camp.

Day 2: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Program overview

Tour details:

On this day, you will observe birds leave their nests for food in the river, including cotingas, macaws, parrots, vultures and probably the harpy eagle. You will have breakfast in the camp, then, have an excursion to the Cocha Shansho lagoon (1 hours 30 minutes) following the course of Yanayacu - Pucate. On the way, you will see giant trees of Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), Capirona, Capinuri (Heliocóstilis scabra), and birds like Toucan (Pteroglossus), Macaw (Ara macao), Macaw (Ara ararauna), and Great White Egret Kingfisher (Chloroceryele).

You will continue to do bird watching or "Hoatzins" (Opysthocomus hoazin), which feeds on the shores of the lagoon. Next, you will return to the camp and have lunch. After lunch, you will have an excursion to see monkeys and tails (Saimiri boliviensis), "tamarins" (Saguinus fuscicollis), and sloths (Bradypus variegatus). The dinner and overnight will be at the camp.

Day 3: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Program overview:

  • Excursion for Japan and Yanta Laguna Break
  • Poultry and fish observation
  • Nightwalk in canoa

Tour details:

On this day, you will have breakfast, a morning excursion in the Japanese creek and Yanta Laguna where you can observe birds and fish which can be found in the reserve such as piranhas (Serrasalmus), shad (Brycun americus), sardines (Triportheus), among others. Then, you will have lunch, Canoe ride at night to appreciate the views of the reserve at sunset, dinner, and overnight at the camp

Day 4: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Program overview:

  • Navigation for the Yanayacu
  • View of the exquisite flora and fauna

Tour details:

On this day, you will have breakfast early before breaking camp. Then, you will be navigating to the Yanayacu where it is possible to see pink dolphins of Pucate (Inia geoffrenssis), "taricayas" locally known as river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) and probably otters (Ptenerura brasiliensis). Next, you will arrive at the place where you will put the next camp. The lunch will be on the river looking at the beautiful landscape. You will also recognize on foot to appreciate the exquisite flora and fauna of this area and have dinner at the camp.

Day 5: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Nauta - Iquitos

Program overview:

  • Return to the city of Nauta

Tour details:

On this day, you will have breakfast at the camp. Then, you will return to the city of Nauta, to Iquitos, and transfer of land. Lastly, you will be transferred to your hotel or airport is the case at appropriate times.
