Gorilla trekking rules

  • A maximum number of 8 visitors may visit a group (family) of habituated gorillas in a day.
  • Always wash your hands before you head out to see the gorillas.
  • Do not leave litter in the park.
  • Keep your voices low at all times while with the gorillas. However, it is okay to ask the guide questions. This will ensure that you will be able to observe the beautiful birds and other wildlife in the forest.
  • Keep a minimum distance of 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas.
  • Do not eat or drink while you are near the gorillas.
  • Sometimes the gorillas charge. Follow the guide’s example by crouching down slowly and do not look at the gorillas in the eyes. Wait for the gorilla to pass you by and do not attempt to run away (as this will increase the risk of attack).
  • Flash photography is not permitted. When taking pictures, move slowly and carefully.
  • Do not touch the gorillas. They are wild animals.
  • The maximum time visitors are allowed to spend with the gorillas is a regulated one hour.

Ngamba Island

Ngamba Island is part of the Koome group of islands located in Lake Victoria, 23 kilometers south of Entebbe. It consists of approximately 100 acres, 98 of which are forested and separated from the visitor's area by an electric fence. The Island was officially opened to visitors in October 1999 and is currently home to about 42 chimpanzees. Chimpanzees need a range of about 100 acres each so this habitat is seriously inadequate.

Ngamba Island is a project of Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT), established in 1997 by the Born Free Foundation (UK), International Fund for Animal Welfare (USA), The Jane Goodall Institute (Germany and Uganda), The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre Trust (UWECT) and the Zoological Board of New South Wales (Australia). It provides these orphaned chimpanzees with a secure home to live out their lives since a return to their natural habitat is not possible.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park contains one of the loveliest and most varied tracts of tropical forests in Uganda. The forest cover is interspersed with patches of grassland and swamp which dominate the northern and central parts of the park elevated plateau. It covers an area of 795 square kilometers.

The park is home to a total of 70 mammal species, most famously 13 species of primates, including chimpanzees. It also contains over 375 bird species. Kibale National Park adjoins Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south to create a 180-kilometer long corridor for wildlife between Ishasha, the remote southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Sebitoli in the north of Kibale National Park.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a community run initiative that protects the Magombe swamp. It is good for primates and butterflies but the 4.5-kilometer trail is one of the best-guided bird trails in East Africa. The swamp is home to 138 bird species.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth hosts a large variety and volume of wildlife. It boasts one of the highest biodiversity ranging from the open savanna to rain forest, dense swamps and beautiful crater lakes to the vastness of Lake Edward. You can find almost 10 species that include hippos, buffaloes, lions, leopard, and the elusive giant forest hog. There are also over 600 species of birds that can be found here.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to the endangered Mountain gorillas. Moreover, the bird life in Bwindi is quite superb and there is an incredible variety of flora there. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park holds 348 species of birds and supports 24 of 26 Alberine rift endemics that occur in Uganda.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo is the best place in the country to see the gigantic eland, antelope, as well as zebra, topi, impala, and several acacia-associated birds. The five lakes within the park attract hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds while fringing swamps inside the national park hide some unique animals such as the sitatunga antelope and also red, black, and yellow papyrus gonolek.

"My first trip to Uganda and Rwanda was with All Gorilla Trips. Jane put together a great itinerary for us that allowed us to see a wide array of parks. Our driver, Fred, did a fabulous job on the very difficult roads, especially the one leading to Bwindi. We enjoyed both countries and plan to return."

"Seeing the mountain gorillas has been on my list of things to do for so many years, and, after six years of saving up, I was finally ready to do it! I reached out to over 20 tour operators and was impressed with how many were quick to respond. Jane, however, went above and beyond just responding. She worked with me to get me into the smaller, less-crowded lodges (a must for me) and to help me see Kidepo Valley when many tour operators told me there were no flights. She was always quick to reply and worked with me through every revision. I especially like how she placed us in Kasenyi Safari Camp when we were in QENP. It was the highlight of my safari, from the game drives to the isolated cabins on the dry soda lake, to the fabulous meals."

"All Gorillas Trips was our tour operator. They are efficient, very friendly and coordinated in their activities. Our whole trip from start to finish was well taken care off and comfortable. Barring a small incident at one of the Lodges (Not Gorillas Trips fault), everything was fine and the whole experience for us was fascinating and rewarding. Jane in the office and Fred our driver, guide, and the friends were truly awesome. Very caring and attentive to the smallest need and made sure we lacked nothing during the whole journey through Uganda and Rwanda. Hope to do it again sometimes. And most certainly recommend their services to the like-minded intrepid traveler. Kudos to them!"
