In this safari holiday, you will be accommodated at a 4-star bush lodge within Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

Day 1 (Johannesburg - Pilanesberg Game Reserve)

On the first day, you will leave Johannesburg in the late morning and take the 2,5-hour drive west towards the malaria-free Pilanesberg Game Reserve within the Bojanala Region of the North West Province. Afterward, you will check in at the lodge, freshen up, and prepare for your afternoon game drive starting around 15:30 (winter) or 16:30 (summer).

Using all their senses and experience, your ranger will seek out the animals and stop for anything of interest, possibly the spoor of hunting lions or a herd of dazzling zebras. Upon returning to the Lodge, a yummy dinner awaits, along with your first-night stay in the wild African bushveld.

Day 2 (Pilanesberg Game Reserve)

On the next day, you will enjoy a full day relaxing in the African bush and choose from either a morning or evening game drive, with the rest of the day relaxing around the pool at the lodge.

All game drives are undertaken in open safari vehicles and are fitted with 2-way radios enabling communication of the best game viewing sights. Open safari vehicles allow for superb photographic opportunities. In the evening, you will have dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 3 (Pilanesberg Game Reserve - Johannesburg)

On the last day, your ranger will awake you with coffee, tea, and rusks before heading out into the sunrise to see what has been happening in the dead of night and follow spoor of animals on the move. You will also be lead on foot to discover sights which you would miss from a vehicle.

Vervet monkeys and birds in song truly are a beautiful way to bring on a new day in South Africa. After your game activity, you will return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious, hearty breakfast and some leisure time. Afterward, you will leave the park, travel back to Johannesburg, and arrive in the late afternoon.

  • Duncan Petrie

Originally from Johannesburg, Duncan decided to take a change of pace and was fortunate enough to start his career in the South African tourism industry by working in a private game lodge within the greater Kruger Park area. Working his way up to a safari guide, he quickly discovered the joy and pride of being able to present this amazing country with all its natural beauty, intricate history and culturally rich people to visitors from all over the world.

  • Matthew Bloomberg

Matthew grew up in Camps Bay, from there he started exploring both the west and east coast of South Africa with family and friends. After completing his studies, Matthew took to guiding naturally and is always enthusiastic to show people this wonderful country which he has explored from a very early age.

Your safari holiday will take place at Pilanesberg Game Reserve, North West Province, South Africa. Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the park ranks among the largest of the parks in South Africa and covers an area of some 55,000 hectares. It is home to the Big Five as well as most species of mammals, reptiles, and birds.

You will be served daily breakfast and dinner. As an additional information, South African is one of only 12 countries in the world with drinkable tap water. The tap water quality is the third-best overall in the world. It is advisable, though, to take bottled water with you when traveling to remote rural areas and the bush.

On the second day of your safari holiday, you can catch the Sun City Shuttle to explore the Valley of the Waves and other interesting attractions.

"I can’t say enough good things about David Smith and African Blue Tours. My friends and I had had a wonderful 3-day safari in Kruger through them in 2006, so I reached out to them again when I knew that I’d be going to Cape Town for a conference, and I wanted to add a week’s holiday for my husband (who’d never been to Africa before). We signed up for four of the trips offered on the website:"

"1) the day trip to the Cape Town townships and Robben Island"

"2) the day trip to the Cape of Good Hope"

"3) the 3-day trip to greater Kruger National Park"

"4) the day trip to the Cradle of Humankind and Lesedi, outside of Johannesburg (the day of our night flight home)."

"David and company took care of all of the arrangements, including transfers and the hotel in Joburg. They even gave us a break on the full package price. Each of the trips was well-planned, very interesting, and led by exceptional guides; the entire week became the trip of a lifetime. When we go back to South Africa again (and we will!), we will rely on the travel acumen of African Blue Tours, since we know whatever trips we choose will be well-run, exceptional and affordable."

"I brought a group of 20 senior cricket fans to Cape Town for the Newlands Test on January 3, 2010. I was in contact with David Smith of African Blue Tours by email to arrange trips for the group on New Year’s Day and on the 2nd of January. On both days he was our guide and gave us the benefit of his local knowledge having been brought up in Camps Bay. The bus provided was a 25-seater comfortable with air con and a personable driver. The Cape Peninsula tour was everything I asked you for, taking in Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Chapmans Peak, and Cape Point. We returned via the Penguins at Boulders Beach and had a pleasant drink on the quay at Simonstown. The winelands tour highlight was the cellar tour and tasting at Seidelberg, which was David’s idea. They provided local cheeses and Italian meats with the tasting at 11 a.m. Boschendal wine tasting and Le Picnic for lunch were also good in a wonderful setting under the trees. We returned via Stellenbosch and called in at Spier to see the Cheetah Outreach project, look in the shop and have a drink. Our two days out were enjoyed by all the group, and I have no hesitation in recommending African Blue Tours as your trip organizer in Cape Town."

"I am so happy that I contacted David Smith and African Blue Tours. I was looking for a moderately priced safari, not foo far from Cape Town and I exchanged numerous emails with David. His replies were always prompt and full of useful information. David is a thorough professional, very organized, and extremely knowledgeable about the extraordinary array and diversity of safari choices available in South Africa. We followed all his recommendations, and he arranged a wonderful 3-day safari to Sanbona for my wife and myself in August 2015. The trip was absolutely perfect. I can’t recommend it highly enough. As an added benefit, we had private transportation to and from Sanbona with David and his wife Michelle. On the trip back from Sanbona, all I could think about was the next trip I wanted to do with African Blue. Thanks David for arranging such a dream vacation for my wife and me."
