Days 1 to 4

Arrive at Kasane and meet your guide who will take you through an orientation of the trip and then eventually transfer you on 4x4 wheel drive vehicle to the first destination of your trip. Enjoy your trip as you drive to Savuti.

Savuti is a suitable place that no one would like to miss in a holiday trip. It is popularly known for its unique experience of abundance in wildlife species and beautiful landscape covered with mash of grass. Amazing sighting for cats such as lions and leopards has been a memorable experience since the place existed. Old bull elephants are notable and permanently residing in the area. Secretary Bird, Kori Bustard, Carmine Bee Eaters, and Fish Eagle are the common highlights birding species in Savuti. All daily meals will be served every day as planned with your tour leader. You will spend three nights here in Savuti.

Days 5 to 7

For another safari experience, you will drive in the northeast tip of Moremi for another camping site at Khwai for three nights. This area is rich in evergreen trees and wildlife such as predators and prey. Lions and leopards sighting are some of the common game viewing highlights in the area, as well as exceptional birding such as Kingfishers and Wattled crane amongst many. This area encompasses wetlands where water-based activities are the best way to experience the floodplains formed by the presently listed heritage site, the Okavango Delta.

African Big Five Tours and Safaris' trips are conducted by qualified professional guides who are well equipped with the knowledge of the wildlife, culture and history of the attractions as well as the country. For good photographic pictures, the guides are enthusiastic and eager to help the guests to take quality pictures that will create everlasting memories of the trip.

Days 8 and 9

Moremi Game Reserve is located on the eastern part of the Okavango Delta. It covers up to one third of the Okavango Delta. The reserve is popularly known for its diverse concentration of wildlife species, birds, and rich vegetation throughout the year. The wetlands give an incredible view and spectacular game sighting. The highlights include the rare sitatunga, lechwe, lion, and leopard. Large herds of impala, zebra, and buffalo normally flock to the beautiful floodplains to drink water. The papyrus along the waterways is normally a home to the lechwe and is suitable for boat cruises; therefore, a boat cruise is vital to experience more of the uniqueness of delta channels. You will spend two nights in Moremi Game Reserve (Second Bridge).

Days 10 and 11

The next destination will be in the Xakanaxa region where you explore the surrounding wilderness on morning and afternoon game drive excursions. Xakanaxa is situated at the heart of Moremi Game Reserve. It is concentrated with various wildlife and vegetation species. Every type of mopane habitat is well represented in this drive from the towering cathedral woodlands Xakanaxa to the classic climax mopane woodland and in the drier and harsher habitats, extensive stretches of scrub mopane.

It is a good birding place. A good day for raptors with African hawk-eagle, gabar goshawk, shikra, little sparrowhawk, dark chanting goshawk, tawny eagle, lesser spotted eagle, and steppe eagle all inhabiting the mopane and adjacent woodlands. Other birds common along this route includes most of Botswana’s hornbills including red-billed, Southern yellow-billed, African grey, bradfield’s, and the Southern ground hornbills. A large number of brood-parasites may also be seen. You will spend two nights here in Xakanaxa.

Day 12

The guide will meet you where your accommodation has been reserved and take you to one of the tented camping sites in Maun for one night. The inclusions are all meals, daily activities, limited laundry, and drinks

Days 13 to 15

The next day begins with breakfast served at the Maun tented camp and then head on to Central Kalahari Game Reserve which is a bit distant, therefore, a packed lunch will be served on chosen space. Arrive at Central Kalahari Game Reserve for a mobile camping experience in your luxury tented accommodation. The following morning after having breakfast you will start your game drive to explore flora and fauna in the reserve.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the world’s the second largest wildlife reserve. Fantastically remote with seemingly endless stretches of grassland and sandy desert, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve was originally established as a place for the San to practice their traditional lifestyle without intrusion. Tourism is still developing here and visitors are still few and far between, making it feel truly off the beaten track. You will spend three nights in Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Day 16

Wake up in the morning, have breakfast, and head on to Nxai Pan for another safari experience. Makgadikgadi consists of many large salt pans, the largest of which reaches 4,900 square kilometers which are seasonally covered in water and grass. Wildebeest, zebra, and flamingos congregate on the pans, and ancient baobab trees dot the surreal, salt desert. Packed lunch will be served on a chosen space as you drive to Nxai Pan. You will spend one night in Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve.

Days 17 and 18

The day begins with a wakeup call and then breakfast will be served and then head on for the game drive to experience the natural habitat and beautiful landscape as well as the wildlife. When you come back from the morning game drive, lunch will be served at the camping area. You will experience an exceptionally diverse range of activities: walk and game drives.

Nxai Pan has is a unique attraction of Botswana located in northern part of Makgadikgadi Park. It has a vast of wildlife species that reside in the reserve area. The grass-covered pans are scattered with acacia trees and mopane woodland and provide a haven for wildlife when they turn green during the rainy season. Arrive back from Nxai Pan to Maun and your guide will transfer you to the airport and then connect.

Please note that the maximum traveling hours in a day is five to six hours with a minimum of three to four hours. These hours include game drives.

Camping in the great outdoors is a truly an amazing experience but it does come with a few risks. Botswana is very lucky to have animals roam free with over 30 percent of its landscape dedicated to wildlife and staying in these wild places is a true privilege. Due to this, African Big Five Tours and Safaris recommends that you are extremely vigilant during your time in camp. You never know who will come to visit. Night time is particularly important, as your eyesight is not as well adapted to twilight as your furry friends.

For your journey through Botswana, you will be driven in what is called a safari limo which is a Land Rover / Cruiser game viewer. These are specially adapted vehicles with a frame that sits on the car with bench seats to give you maximum space and view of the landscapes and wildlife you’ll encounter. These can be tricky to climb in and out of but you’ll soon have your own technique and will be a pro by the end of your trip. If you suffer from back problems or have any mobility issues, please let African Big Five Tours and Safaris know in your form so they can help.

Other information books

Your guide will have books on flora and fauna as well as a couple of recommended reads, but if you want to invest in your own copies, here is a list of essential safari books:

  • Sasol’s Birds of Southern Africa by Ian Sinclair, Phil Hockey, Peter Ryan, and Warwick Tarboton
  • A Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa by Chris and Tilde Stuart
  • Wildlife Photography in Botswana - A Practical Guide by James Gifford and Steven Stockhall (can be purchased in Botswana)

Also, if you have an iPad, there are some great apps such as e-birds. African Big Five Tours and Safaris also recommends bringing a novel to read for those quiet afternoons in camp as well as a bit of nighttime reading.
