You will be accommodated in a mobile camp during the safari. You will camp for two nights at Nxai Pan National Park, three nights at Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one night at Makgadikgadi Pan National Park, three nights at Khwai, and another three nights at Savuti.

Camping in the wilderness

Camping in the great outdoors is a truly an amazing experience but it does come with a few risks. Botswana is very lucky to have animals roam free. With over 30% of Botswana’s landscape dedicated to wildlife, staying in these wild places is a true privilege. Due to this, African Big Five Tours and Safaris recommends you be extremely vigilant during your time in camp. You never know who will come to visit. Night time is particularly important, as your eyesight is not as well adapted to twilight as your furry friends. The camp will consist of a dining tent, dome tents with bedrolls with toilet, and bucket shower cubicles to share.

Day 1: Arrival / pick-up day

Upon your arrival at Maun Airport (MUB), you will be met by your guide. Then, you will immediately depart in a 4x4 safari vehicle to the entrance of Nxai Pan National Park. Your fully serviced private mobile camp will be situated inside Nxai Pan National Park and you will stay here for two nights.

Day 2: Nxai Pan National Park (exploration day)

Your day will begin with a wakeup call and then breakfast will be served. After that, you will head on for a game drive to experience the natural habitat, beautiful landscape, and the wildlife. When you come back from morning game drive, lunch will be served at the camping area. You will experience an exceptionally diverse range of activities. Nxai Pan is a unique attraction of Botswana located in northern part of Makgadikgadi Pan National Park. It has a vast of wildlife species that reside in the reserve area. The grass-covered pans are scattered with acacia trees and Mopane woodland, providing a haven for wildlife when they turn green during the rainy season.

  • Activities: Bush walk and game drives

Day 3: Central Kalahari Game Reserve (travel day)

After an early breakfast, you will leave Nxai Pan National Park to Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) where you will spend three nights. A packed lunch will be served on a chosen space. You will arrive at CKGR for a mobile camping experience in African Big Five Tours and Safaris' luxury tented accommodation.

Day 4 to 5: Central Kalahari Game Reserve (exploration days)

These two days will be spent exploring the CKGR, so after having breakfast, you will start your game drive to explore flora and fauna in the reserve. The CKGR is the world’s second-largest wildlife reserve. Fantastically remote with seemingly endless stretches of grassland and sandy desert, the CKGR was originally established as a place for the San to practice their traditional lifestyle without intrusion. Tourism is still developing here and visitors are still few and far between, making it feel truly off the beaten track.

  • Activities: Morning and afternoon game drives

Day 6: Makgadikgadi Pan National Park (travel and exploration day)

You will wake up in the morning, have breakfast, and then head on to Makgadikgadi Pan for another safari experience. You will spend one night at Makgadikgadi Pan. A packed lunch will be served on a chosen space. Makgadikgadi consists of many large salts pans. It is the largest pan of which reaches 4,900 square kilometers and are seasonally covered in water and grass. Wildebeest, zebra, and flamingos congregate on the pans, and ancient baobab trees dot the surreal salt desert.

  • Activities: Morning and afternoon game drives

Day 7: Khwai (travel day)

For another safari experience, you will drive in the northeast tip of Moremi for another camping site at Khwai. You will spend three nights here.

Day 8 to 9: Khwai (exploration day)

This area is reached in evergreen trees and wildlife such as predators and prey. Lions and leopards sighting are some of the common game viewing highlights in the area, as well as exceptional birding such as Kingfishers and Wattled crane amongst many. This area encompasses wetlands where water-based activities are the best to experience the floodplains formed by the presently listed heritage site, the Okavango Delta. Your trips will be conducted by qualified professional guides who are well-equipped with the knowledge of the wildlife, culture, and history of the attractions as well as the country. For good photographic pictures, the guides will be enthusiastic and eager to help you to take quality pictures that will create everlasting memories of the trip.

  • Activities: Morning and afternoon game drives

Day 10: Savuti (travel day)

Today, you will travel further north and into the southern part of Chobe National Park towards Savuti with a packed lunch and game viewing en-route. You will arrive in the mid-afternoon at the camp where you will stay for the following two nights.

Day 11 to 12: Savuti (exploration days)

Savuti is a suitable place that no one would like to miss on a holiday trip. It is popularly known for its unique experience of abundance in wildlife species and the beautiful landscape covered with a mash of grass. Amazing sighting of cats such as lions and leopards has been a memorable experience since the place existed. Old bull elephants are notable and permanently residing in the area. Secretary bird, kori bustard, carmine bee-eaters, and fish eagle are the common highlights of birding species in Savuti. You will enjoy extensive morning and afternoon game drives in the Savuti region and be exploring this desert region.

Day 13: Departure / drop-off day

You will depart from Savuti to Kasane Airport (BBK), arriving in time for your connecting flight home.

Note: The minimum traveling hours in a day is three to four hours while the maximum traveling hours in a day is five to six hours. These hours will include game drives.

Wildlife and game viewing

It is highly recommended to invest in a good pair of binoculars. The Nikon Monarch 10x42 is a great value. You will be spending many hours each day watching and photographing Botswana’s wildlife. A decent DSLR is recommended with a wide-angle lens and a zoom lens. Wildlife viewing, birding, and photography require huge amounts of time and patience. Each morning, you will take a tea and coffee box for a mid-morning break served with biscuits or rusks.

Some days, you will carry a picnic lunch, allowing you to stay out all day. Morning and evening light is most favored by photographers, but Botswana’s beautiful light allows photography, birding, and game viewing all day long. You will likely to get up early and start the morning pre-dawn to experience silhouettes and backlit scenarios from a photography perspective and it is also the time that the predators are most active. Evening sunsets are great opportunities for light and landscapes as well as predatory behavior.

For your journey through Botswana, you will be driven in what African Big Five Tours and Safaris calls a “safari limo” which is a Land Rover / Cruiser game viewer. These are specially adapted vehicles where a frame that sits on the car with bench seats give you a maximum space as well as the view of the landscapes and wildlife you’ll encounter. These can be tricky to climb in and out of but you’ll soon have your own technique and will be a pro by the end of your trip. If you suffer from back problems or have any mobility issues, please let us know in your form so we can help.

Other information

Your guide will have books on flora and fauna as well as a couple of recommended reads but if you want to invest in your own copies, here is a list of essential safari books:

  • "Sasol’s Birds of Southern Africa" by Ian Sinclair, Phil Hockey, Peter Ryan, and Warwick Tarboton
  • "A Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa" by Chris and Tilde Staurt
  • "Wildlife Photography in Botswana – A Practical Guide" by James Gifford and Steven Stockhall (can be purchased in Botswana)

Also, if you have an iPad, there are some great apps such as e-birds. African Big Five Tours and Safaris also recommends you bringing a novel to read for those quiet afternoons in camp as well as a bit of nighttime reading.

This safari will take place at various locations in Botswana including Nxai Pan National Park, Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pan National Park, Khwai, Okavango Delta, and Savuti.

Nxai Pan National Park

Nxai Pan National Park is a national park in northeastern Botswana, consisting of Nxai Pan which is one of the Makgadikgadi Pan salt flats. Nxai Pan National Park lies just north of the Maun-Nata main road and adjoins the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park on its northern border. The pan itself is a fossil lakebed about 40 square kilometers in size. Sometimes, the Nxai is covered by grass during the raining season. Lions, southern giraffe, elephants, and much other wildlife including birds can be seen here. The Thomas Baines is also in the Nxai Pan.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR), situated right in the center of Botswana, was set up in 1961. It is the largest game reserve in the world at 52,800 square kilometers. The reserve is characterized by vast open plains, salt pans, and ancient riverbeds. Varying from sand dunes with many species of trees and shrubs in the north to flat bushveld in the central area, the reserve is more heavily wooded in the south with Mopane forests to the south and east. Rainfall is sparse and sporadic and can vary from 170 to 700 millimeters per year.

Makgadikgadi Pan National Park

The Makgadikgadi Pan, a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savannah of northeastern Botswana (on the south of the Maun-Nata road and it is bordered by Nxai Pan), is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi which once covered an area larger than Switzerland but dried up several thousand years ago. The Makgadikgadi Pan is approximately 12,000 square kilometers. Hundreds of herds of blue wildebeest, zebras, springbok, gemsbok, and thousands of flamingos can be seen here.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is a large low gradient alluvial fan or "inland delta" located in northwestern Botswana. The area includes permanent swamps which cover approximately 600,000 hectares along with up to 1.2 million hectares of seasonally flooded grassland. The inscribed World Heritage property encompasses an area of 2,023,590 hectares with a buffer zone of 2,286,630 hectares. The Okavango Delta is one of a very few large inland delta systems without an outlet to the sea known as an endorheic delta in which its waters drain instead of into the desert sands of the Kalahari Basin.

Okavango Delta is Africa’s third largest alluvial fan and the continent’s largest endorheic delta. Furthermore, it is in a nearly pristine state being a largely untransformed wetland system. The biota has uniquely adapted their growth and reproductive behavior, particularly the flooded grassland biota, to be timed with the arrival of floodwater in the dry winter season of Botswana.

Savuti is located in the Southern part of Chobe National Park which is mainly the arid region and a landscape that consists of sand veld, Mopane forest, acacia savannah, marshland, and rocky outcrops. The main channel (Savuti channel) gives life and the connection between the marshland and the Linyanti River. Savuti is famous for its predators (lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and wild dogs). It is again a home for a wide range of bull elephants’ herd and many antelopes. Bushmen paintings are still visible in this area.
