"Not what we expected but was absolutely wonderful"
We signed up for this intending to volunteer and when we arrived, it was clear that our role was very limited and what we were able to contribute was primarily our presence, and the money we paid to be there rather than having a defined role as a volunteer. That being said, it ended up being a terrific experience which I (and my two teen boys) thoroughly enjoyed. We got to know some "real people" and our 10 days at the camp did not feel like "tourist time" but more genuine.
Basically, we partnered with the park rangers, doing wildlife patrols in the park twice daily to monitor the animals (whereabouts, numbers, health) and to deal with human activity in the park. This is a community conservancy so local community members also use the park to graze cattle primarily. However, non community members are not allowed there, nor are people allowed to collect firewood and obviously, there is no hunting of animals, so the park rangers also deal with these situations and we were able to be present for much of this.
There was no community outreach, school visits or research into human wildlife conflict as suggested by the volunteer posting. But just spending time outdoors, with rangers doing their daily job, was informative and a lot of fun. We had already had 2 weeks of safari, and this is NOT primarily a safari experience but you are out seeing animals daily and the people in the camp were lovely. Food was excellent, prepared for the volunteers by a fantastic cook.
