Feel an amazing experience witnessing wildebeest moving around Maasai Mara National Reserve looking for water and food. At the same time, you will also see lions lurking around the pack looking for a chance to grab one of the creatures to extend its life. You will be accommodated at Basecamp Maasai Mara for the first and the second night, and then at Eagle View for the third and the fourth night, and at Wilderness camp for the fifth and the sixth night.
You will arrive at Ol Kiombo Airstrip and find a friendly and experienced Maasai guide waiting, ready to take you on your very first game drive! You will set off in one of the open and tailor-made 4 x 4 safari land cruisers. During your drive, you will be introduced to the guest of honor of the great migration: Mr. wildebeest himself.
Perhaps not the most clever or cutest creature on the planet, the wildebeest is nevertheless the star of the largest get-together of large mammals on the planet. Also known as a gnu, these odd-looking beasts have an essential part to play in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. Even its dung has significant value; 60,000 tons worth of fertilizer.
At around 16:00, you stroll across the private suspension bridge to meet your Maasai guide for your afternoon game drive. As the temperature cools in the late afternoon, the predators of the Mara start preparing for the evening hunt. For the big cats: the lions, the cheetah, and the leopards, the migration season is a time of abundance. The vast amount of available prey allows the cats to grow strong and produce healthy offspring.
During your afternoon game drive, you will witness how the constant battle for survival makes the migration season a particularly exhilarating time to visit Basecamp Explorer Kenya. As the sun sets, you will return to camp for dinner followed by stargazing and story-time around the fireplace. When you’re ready, one of the Maasai night guards, known as Askaris, will escort you back to your tent, where you will be lulled to sleep by the sounds of chewing wildebeest and singing grasshoppers. You will spend your night at Basecamp Maasai Mara.
Wake up to the beautiful rising sunshine and sweet voices of birdlife. After a hearty breakfast, the naturalist Maasai guide will take you on a camp walk to show you some of the operational elements that have made basecamp one of the leading pioneers in the responsible tourism industry. See how it reuse, recycle, and regenerate every step of the way.
After lunch, you will meet your Maasai guide for your afternoon game drive. During your drive, you will learn more about the importance of the wildebeest for the survival of the Maasai Mara ecosystem.
Top off your afternoon game drive with a classic basecamp sundowner of carefully selected drinks enjoyed under an acacia tree. In the evening, you will return to the Basecamp Masai Mara for dinner followed by story sharing and stargazing around the fireplace. The Maasai guide will narrate stories about the unique culture and beliefs as you listen to herds of wildebeest grazing on the other side of the river. You will spend the night at Basement Maasai Mara.
You rise up to the beautiful sunshine and immediately prepare for your morning game drive. You will watch wildebeest grazing around at the lions happily feasting on freshly killed prey. After breakfast at Basecamp Maasai Mara, you will collect your things and prepare to continue your journey through the basecamp circuit. Your next destination is Eagle View Camp, which in 2013 made the National Geographic Travellers Magazine’s list of the twenty-five top eco-lodges in the world which is the only one in Kenya.
At 16:00, meet your Maasai guide for your afternoon game drive. Eagle View is situated inside Naboisho Wildlife Conservancy, a 20,000 hectare (50,000 acres) large nature conservancy leased directly from more than 500 Maasai families. Inside Naboisho, the number of vehicles permitted is strictly limited. This has the double advantage of attracting a wide array of species as well as creating a more exclusive viewing experience for tourists.
Inside Naboisho, you will encounter the northern migration of wildebeest, the not-so-distant relative of the wildebeest migrating from the Serengeti that you meet in the national reserve. The wildebeest of the northern migration walk down from the Lloita Plains in the north in search of fresh grass and water, exactly like the southern relatives. As you drive, enjoy the varied landscape of Naboisho, presently offering the highest density of lions on the planet. You will spend your night at Eagle view.
You will wake up to the rising sunshine and prepare for the morning game drive, followed by a picnic breakfast on the savannah. Explore Naboisho together with your Maasai guide who will tell you more about the importance of private conservancies for the protection of the greater Mara ecosystem and the Maasai people. After your game drive visit the students at Koiyaki Guiding School, a capacity-building institution supported by Basecamp Explorer.
Round off your afternoon game drive with a basecamp sundowner on the savannah. Drive back to Eagle View in the dark. Your guide will equip the car with infrared lights to allow you to spot the nocturnal animals of Naboisho. A night safari is an exhilarating experience, only to be enjoyed inside private conservancies like Naboisho. You will spend the night at Eagle View.
You will wake early in the morning to join your Maasai guide on a morning walking safari across the savannah. Walking alongside the Maasai is an unforgettable experience which perfectly echoes the wanderings of the wildebeest. On your walk, your guide will show you the finer details of the savannah, including wildlife footprints and dung. Your walk finishes at Wilderness Bush Camp, the next stop on your journey through the Basecamp Circuit.
It is likely to think that moving through the Basecamp Circuit mimics the migratory routes of the wildebeest. It is both a physical and a mental journey that will broaden your horizon and deepen your understanding of the wild and of yourself. Wilderness Bush Camp is our tribute to safari as it was meant to be. Tucked away deep inside the incomparable Saddle Valley, it is just you, the Maasai, the wildlife, and the stars absolutely no unnecessary distractions.
After a midday relaxation, join your Maasai guide for an afternoon walk or game drive and returning to camp in time for a three-course dinner served to you in the middle of the wilderness. After dinner, gather around the fireplace to listen to the sweet voices of Maasai singing as you reflect on the experiences you encountered during the day. You will spend the night at Wilderness Camp.
You will wake up early in the morning after breakfast prepare for your full day walking safari. Walk beside the Maasai exactly as the people have been doing for generations. Much like the wildebeest, the Maasai are nomads who walk the savannah in search of food and water for livestock. As the day gets warmer, your guide will choose a suitable acacia tree, under which you can relax and refuel on a packed lunch.
When the temperature cools down, you will continue your walk. Like the wildebeest, the Maasai walk in rhythm with nature. In the evening, you will return to the camp for dinner and overnight stay. You will gather around the fire and share interesting stories before sleeping.
You will wake at dawn in time for the last morning walking safari or opt for morning game drive. You will view how the savannah comes alive as the sun rises. You will then return to the camp for breakfast. After breakfast, you will collect your things and check out. You will be driven to Naboisho Airstrip in time for your scheduled 16:00 flight, the perfect departure time for international connections or for continuing your African adventure by the coast. This marks the end of this exciting safari!
