It occupies a lovely spot overlooking Mfuwe Lagoon, a huge oxbow lake, Mfuwe Lodge is the flagship safari property of the Bushcamp Company. It is one of the larger properties in the South Luangwa National Park, and after extensive refurbishment in 2010 is now one of the smartest and most modern. It lies quite close to the park’s main gate in an area that is very rich in wildlife concentrations.
Much of the furniture and fittings at Mfuwe Lodge come from South Africa and they lend a funky and contemporary edge. The main areas, including the large bar and dining area under thatch, are adorned with artistic woven lampshades, brightly colored cushions, and classy black-and-white photographs.
An extended deck has several low sofas that look out over Mfuwe Lagoon, alongside a simple but large rectangular infinity pool.
The pool is a popular spot to relax, with plenty of sun loungers shaded by cream umbrellas. Indoors, an impressive library offers a cooler and quieter place to chill out. This isn't a huge room, but with a beautiful leather sofa, modern campaign furniture, and some interesting coffee table books, it's both comfortable and restful.
Entirely separate is Mfuwe Lodge's spa, offering a range of options from manicures and massages to hot-stone treatments and facials - all using Africology products. Both the double and single treatment rooms and a Jacuzzi area overlook a particularly pretty part of the lagoon and its resident population of hippos.
There is also a small shop which is stocked and run by Tribal Textiles, a local craft company based in Mfuwe with its roots very much in rural development and philanthropy. Stop here to pick up curios and souvenirs such as wooden carvings, hand-painted tablecloths, T-shirts, and jewelry.
The 18 chalets at Mfuwe Lodge come in two different styles, but all are kitted out with modern furniture standing on polished stone floors. In each chalet, three double doors open onto a veranda where sun loungers offer views of the lagoon and game viewing from the privacy of your room.
The chalets are equipped with tea and coffee stations, hairdryers, and standing fans, while the beds, enveloped by walk-in mosquito nets, are cooled by an additional fan. Each bathroom is largely tiled and includes twin basins and a walk-in rain shower with a view.
You will find Latitude 13° nestled in the leafy lanes on the northern edge of Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe. Welcome to the Makokola Retreat. Brilliantly green gardens reveal spacious beach villas and rooms perched along the shores of Southern Lake Malawi. They provide gracious service in an unmatched experience in Malawi. This showpiece property captures the essence of African design, culture, and tradition.
While staying with Makokola Retreat, fill every moment with a sense of natural connection in the wonderful retreat. The place is on a lake that is beautiful almost beyond belief. Its waters are the habitat of more species of fish than that of any other body of fresh water on the earth.
Lake Malawi has always been known as "Livingstone Lake". The areas of Mangochi and Fort Johnston have an important historical heritage. Livingstone saw for the first time his lake at Mphonda which is only 10 kilometers south of The Makokola Retreat.
Here Livingstone realized that the lake was a route used by the slave traders, a practice he long fought against. Livingstone's acumen allowed him to eradicate slavery by using these routes to trade commodities for the British Crown.
A tropical haven with a relaxed pace, Malawi is famous for its artistic traditions, including dances, wood sculpture, painting, embroidery, and music amongst others. Guests can absorb the Malawian culture that surrounds them by visiting the nearby attractions and admiring the local artwork and crafts around the retreat.
The hand-built villas blend ethno-chic with all that is traditional in Malawi. All the comforts you would expect during your getaway are here, accentuated by locally sourced wooden beams and traditional artwork beneath a thatched roof. The Malawian theme is carried through the décor, with handcrafted furniture, typical artifacts, and local fabrics in rich, vivid colors.
The rooms are just a few steps from the beach yet designed with seclusion in mind. On the Makokola Retreat grounds, pathways lead you to accommodations nestled amid magical natural gardens. It is the haven of rest and relaxation, where you can feel at one with the environment. There is a fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces where time becomes your own.
You will have enthusiastic Malawian hosts to look after you during your stay. They will take care of all your needs, including serving your meals, arranging activities, and guiding you on excursions. They are part of The Makokola Retreat's commitment to the local community and the upliftment of the country's people. Many of them have very little in the way of formal education, but they have genuine warmth and friendliness and will be delighted to receive you.

This safari includes village tour in South Luangwa & City Tour of Lilongwe in Malawi.
This safari will take place in Zambia and Malawi. In Zambia, the safari will cover Lusaka City, and South Luangwa National Park while in Malawi it will cover Lilongwe City and Lake Malawi.
Zambia is a big country as large as France, Switzerland, Austria, and Hungary combined, covering some 750,000 square kilometers and lying in the tropical belt of South Central Africa, 10 to 18 degrees south of the equator.
Being on a high plateau, averaging 1,300 meters above sea level, the climate is very temperate with little humidity. The country is landlocked but has many, lakes and rivers with beaches and water sports to be enjoyed in uncrowned and uncluttered surroundings.
Indeed, the unspoiled nature of Zambia is perhaps its greatest tourist asset. Rich in scenery and wildlife, Zambia today has become the tourist heart of a great continent which offers something that is becoming progressively rare in this shrinking world, the chance to escape from holiday masses and sour something of an environment that has remained unchanged since the very beginning of time.
Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, is defined by its topography of highlands split by the Great Rift Valley and enormous Lake Malawi. The lake’s southern end falls within Lake Malawi National Park – sheltering diverse wildlife from colorful fish to baboons – and its clear waters are popular for diving and boating. Peninsular Cape Maclear is known for its beach resorts.
It was formerly known as Nyasaland and is bordered by Tanzania to the northeast, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east, south, and west. Lake Malawi separates the country from Mozambique. According to World Population Review Malawi has a population of 19,546,033 (2018) and an area of 118,484 sq. Km2. Lilongwe is the capital and the largest city.
