Welcome to The Makokola Retreat. Brilliantly green gardens reveal spacious beach villas and rooms perched along the shores of southern Lake Malawi. They provide gracious service in an unmatched experience in Malawi. This showpiece property captures the essence of African design, culture, and tradition. While staying with them, fill every moment with a sense of natural connection in their wonderful retreat.
The retreat is on a lake that is beautiful almost beyond belief. Its waters are the habitat of more species of fish than that of any other body of fresh water on the earth. Lake Malawi has always been known as "Livingstone's Lake". The areas of Mangochi and Fort Johnston have an important historical heritage.
Livingstone saw for the first time his lake at Mphonda that is only 10 kilometers south of The Makokola Retreat. Here, Livingstone realized that the lake was a route used by the slave traders, a practice he long fought against. Livingstone acumen allowed him to eradicate the slavery by using these routes to trade commodities for the British Crown.
A tropical haven with a relaxed pace, Malawi is famous for its artistic traditions, including dances, wood sculpture, painting, embroidery, and music among others. The guests can absorb the Malawian culture that surrounds them by visiting the nearby attractions and admiring the local artwork and crafts around the retreat.
The hand-built villas blend ethno chic with all that is traditional in Malawi. All the comforts you would expect during your getaway are here, accentuated by locally sourced wooden beams and traditional artwork beneath a thatched roof. The Malawian theme is carried through the décor, with handcrafted furniture, typical artifacts, and local fabrics in rich, vivid colors.
The rooms are just a few steps from the beach yet designed with seclusion in mind. On the Makokola Retreat grounds, pathways lead you to accommodations nestled in the midst of magical natural gardens. It is a haven of rest and relaxation, where you can feel at one with the environment. There is a fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces where time becomes your own.
You will have enthusiastic Malawian hosts to look after you during your stay. They'll take care of all your needs, including serving your meals, arranging activities, and guiding you on excursions. They are part of The Makokola Retreat's commitment to the local community and upliftment of the country's people. Many of them have very little in the way of formal education, but they have a genuine warmth and friendliness and will be delighted to receive you.

This safari will cover Livingstone (Victoria Falls), Lower Zambezi National Park, and Lake Malawi.
Named after the famous Victorian missionary explorer, Dr David Livingstone, who explored this area extensively, Livingstone Town was established in 1905. As a major European settlement, being close to the Zambezi River crossing over to Southern Rhodesia, the town was made the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1911.
As the capital, it enjoyed excellent facilities far superior to anything elsewhere in the country, as can be seen from the surviving Edwardian buildings that line the city’s main road. Livingstone even had the distinction of having the country’s first newspaper.
The capital was moved to Lusaka in 1935 and the bustling city has become a quiet town, but still retaining a special charm. A major event in 2011 was the installation of the town's first set of traffic lights!
The proximity to the Zambezi River and the spectacular Victoria Falls has led Livingstone to become a base for travelers from all over the world wanting to explore this wonder of the world. There are several adventure companies offering river boarding, white water rafting, canoeing, horse riding trails, abseiling, as well as boat cruises, walks with lions, elephant back safaris, quad bikes riding, kayaking and tours to the Victoria Falls, Mukuni Cultural Village, and the places of interest in Livingstone.
Many tour companies and lodges offer a booking agency service in Livingstone to help make your stay as easy and enjoyable as possible. You can fly directly into Livingstone via Livingstone airport.
This park is still relatively undeveloped and its beauty lies in its wilderness state. The diversity of animals is not as wide as the other big parks, but the opportunities to get close to game wandering in and out of the Zambezi channels are spectacular. The park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the Zambezi River is a massive wildlife sanctuary.
The river’s edge is overhung with a thick riverine fringe, including ebony and fig trees. Further inland is a floodplain fringed with mopane forest and interspersed with winter thorn trees and huge acacias. The hills which form the backdrop to the park are covered in broadleaf woodland.
Even though the Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4092 square kilometers, most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor. There is an escarpment along the northern end which acts as a physical barrier to most of the park’s animal species. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the river’s edge. "Island hopping" buffalo and waterbuck are common. The park also hosts good populations of lion and leopard and listen too for the ubiquitous cry of the fish eagle.
Sitting in the sunshine on a palm-fringed, sandy beach with sapphire water stretching as far as the eye can see, you might be forgiven for thinking you're on an oceanic tropical island rather than on the shores of Lake Malawi, hundreds of kilometers from the coast.
Part of the tumble of mountains and lakes that make up the Great Rift Valley, Lake Malawi is the undisputed draw card of what people call the friendliest country in Africa. Covering 30,000 square kilometers and taking up a of Malawi, this massive freshwater body is filled with shoals of brightly colored fish while the branches of lakeside trees act as convenient perches for African fish eagles, their distinctive calls a soothing soundtrack to a Lake Malawi holiday.
The most accessible and popular parts of Lake Malawi are its southern and central regions, and this is where you'll find Absolute Zambia Safaris' pick of lakeside accommodation, ranging from family-friendly beach resorts such as Club Makokola to romantic island lodges including Mumbo Island and Kaya Mawa. Even in these more visited areas the lake is still wonderfully untouched by mass tourism - no queues, no crowds, just a stress-free beach holiday in a unique environment.
Activities offered at Lake Malawi lodges are understandably water-based. With the largest number of fish species of any lake in the world, the snorkeling is fantastic and it’s a top destination for freshwater scuba diving too. The flat lake surface is also perfect for leisurely kayaking and fair-weather sailing.
Back on dry land, there are plenty of opportunities to go bird watching, add on a local big game safari in nearby Liwonde National Park, or just to immerse yourself in the local beach culture - noted as being about as laid-back as it gets.
Lake Malawi is best visited between early May and late October when the climate is mild to warm with little chance of rain and the risk of malaria is at its lowest. Find out more about where to go on Lake Malawi or simply chat to one of Absolute Zambia Safaris' well-traveled Africa safari experts - they know the area well and can recommend the perfect place for a week-long Lake Malawi holiday or will include a couple of relaxing days on the lakeshore as part of a longer Southern Africa safari itinerary.
