During this wildlife tour, you will be accommodated in various guesthouses. Your first three nights will be spent in a three-star guesthouse in Zărnești. The fourth to sixth nights will be spent in a four-star guesthouse in Bucovina, in double rooms with en suite facilities, while the sixth to ninth nights will be spent in a two-star guesthouse in the Danube Delta.

Day 1: Arrival at Zărnești

Arrival and transfer to Zarnesti (approximately three hours' drive) to a local guesthouse where you will be accommodated in comfortable twin rooms with private toilet and hot shower.

Day 2: Zărnești gorge

Today, you will be driven to the point where we start a guided hike in the Piatra Craiului National Park. The first part takes you through Zarnesti gorge, an impressive limestone canyon. With 40-80 meter high walls, it gives you the chance to look for rare birds like Wallcreepers, Alpine swifts, Crag Martins, and also to admire impressive Jurassic geological formations.

For those interested only in birds, you can stop here and enjoy the scenery. Those interested also in hiking will continue to Curmatura Cabin. On the way, you can see signs of wildlife, rare or endemic species of flora and insects, as well as shepherd camps. If the weather allows, you can see the entire limestone ridge (22 kilometer long) which was declared scientific reserve due to the presence of rare and endemic species of flora and insects.

Day 3: The Narcissus Forest, bear hide

After breakfast, you will leave by car to go to the Narcissus Forest, a 400-hectare protected oak forest, to observe wildlife, especially butterflies, insects and birds (approximately one hour drive). You’ll also walk in the area to discover the tracks larger animals leave on the ground.

You will stop at the edge of the forest for lunch (picnic) and relaxation. You will have some time for walking on your own on this amazing forest and enjoy the numerous species of birds, insects and plants.

Today is very feasible to see Ural Owls, Tawny Owls, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, White-backed Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Corncrake, Great Grey Shrike, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Collared Flycatcher, Fieldfare and few other rare birds, as well as numerous species of butterflies and insects.

In the afternoon, you’ll have dinner in Sinca Noua village at one of the local entrepreneurs then head to a local bear hide for a chance to see bears (a facility where bears are attracted with food for observations - chances to see the bears are 99%). Late in the evening, you will drive back to your guesthouse in Zarnesti to prepare for the next day.

Day 4: Transfer to Bucovina

As the distance is appreciable, you take a full day to get to the next destination: Bucovina. On the way, you will stop to stretch your legs with a half an hour break at the Bicaz Gorge and lunch (sandwiches prepared from Zarnesti). In the afternoon, you'll arrive in Gura Humorului. You’ll be accommodated in rustic and comfortable double rooms with private toilet and hot shower.

Day 5 to 6: Visits to the painted monasteries

You will take the next two days to visit five of the famous painted monasteries of Bucovina: Moldovita, Sucevita, Putna, Humor, and Voronet.

Day 7: Transfer to Crisan

As the distance is appreciable, you will take a full day to get to the next destination: the Danube Delta. In the afternoon, you will arrive in Murighiol, from where you will take a private boat to your two-star guesthouse in Crisan, a small fishermen village located right in the center of the Danube Delta. You’ll be accommodated in basic but comfortable twin rooms with private toilet and hot shower.

Day 8 to 9: Boat trips in the Danube Delta

You'll be driven by small boats through a chain of beautiful lakes and channels where you’ll see a great variety of birds like White Pelicans, Dalmatian Pelicans, Glossy Ibis, or Pigmy Cormorants, to mention just some of the rarest species you have the chance to see in great numbers.

Day 10: Departure

Transfer back to the airport and departure. Depending on your flight schedule, you will depart for a four-hour drive back to the airport. You are adviced to take an afternoon flight, as during night there is no traffic allowed in Danube Delta.

The Carpathians are home to wolves, bears and lynx, as well as numerous bird species like Wallcreeper, Ural Owl, Nutcracker, Alpine Accentor, Water Pipit, woodpeckers and different songbirds (Goldcrest, Firecrest, Crossbill, Serin). Bucovina is famous worldwide for its painted monasteries, which cultural value included them on the UNESCO world heritage list.

On the other hand, Danube Delta is Europe’s largest wetland reserve and one of the best places in Europe for birdwatching, covering 2,681 square kilometers (1,676 square miles), with a sprawling, watery wilderness accessible only by water. The delta is a natural stopover for migratory birds, with more than 300 species of migratory and permanent species of birds and more than 160 species of fish.

In the centre of Romania, inside the elbow of the Transylvanian Carpathians are located Piatra Craiului National Park and the town of Zarnesti, near Brasov city. This is where the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project was located for 10 years and where the “core” activities of our travel agency take place. Zarnesti is the main gate to Piatra Craiului National Park, a former industrial town with amazing touristic resources.

Brasov is one of the most important towns of Romania, being voted two years in a row the most beautiful town in Romania. Its touristic infrastructure is quite developed, with lots of hostels, hotels and guesthouses, as well as tourist attractions of all kinds, still managing to not being kitsch. Close to Brasov is one of the best bear hides and the boar hide you'll use with very high rate of success.
